{"id":61103,"date":"2026-04-07T16:23:28","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T20:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=61103"},"modified":"2026-04-07T19:17:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T23:17:25","slug":"theyre-my-inspiration-emu-dedicates-inclusivity-in-science-mural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2026\/theyre-my-inspiration-emu-dedicates-inclusivity-in-science-mural\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018They&#8217;re my inspiration\u2019: EMU dedicates Inclusivity in Science Mural"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Whenever third-year biochemistry major <strong>Dante Flowe <\/strong>walks by the Inclusivity in Science Mural and sees the smiling faces along the walls of the Suter Science Center, they feel a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese people are my friends and they&#8217;re my colleagues and they&#8217;re my inspiration,\u201d Flowe told a roomful of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Harrisonburg residents during a dedication ceremony of the mural on March 27. \u201cI may not know them on a personal level, but every time I see them on the wall of this building, I know that people recognize the work they\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That feeling extends beyond just the students at EMU. <strong>Dr. Tara Kishbaugh<\/strong>, dean of faculty and student success, said that seeing the mural fills her with joy. \u201cEvery time I see it, it makes me happy,\u201d she told the crowd gathered for the ceremony at Suter Science Center 106.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Inclusivity in Science Mural, completed in summer 2022, celebrates the scholarship and contributions of seven scientists whose identities as women, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), and\/or queer individuals have historically been underrepresented in scientific spaces. The mural\u2019s stylized portraits depict chemist&nbsp;<strong>Asima Chatterjee<\/strong>, mathematician&nbsp;<strong>Gladys West<\/strong>, mathematician&nbsp;<strong>Katherine Johnson<\/strong>, arachnologist&nbsp;<strong>Lauren Esposito<\/strong>, astrophysicist&nbsp;<strong>Nergis Mavalvala<\/strong>, eco-philosopher <strong>P\u0131nar Ate\u015f Sinopoulos-Lloyd<\/strong>, and ADM (ret.)&nbsp;<strong>Rachel Levine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[The mural] names the contributions that have too often gone unrecognized,\u201d said Interim President <strong>Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Sinopoulos-Lloyd, who participated earlier that day in the second annual <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2026\/mayor-reed-reprises-role-as-talk-show-host-for-second-annual-mornings-with-the-mayor-convocation\/\"><em>Mornings with the Mayor <\/em>Convocation<\/a>, gave a talk and contributed to a panel conversation. Levine, the former U.S. assistant secretary for health, <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2026\/former-u-s-assistant-secretary-for-health-visits-campus-for-mural-dedication\/\">chatted with EMU News<\/a> and also attended the event. They also spoke about the importance of representation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis mural we\u2019re honoring today is not just artwork,\u201d Sinopoulos-Lloyd said. \u201cIt\u2019s also a constellation. Landes Beck, Horst, Piwonka, and Rhodes-Lehman spoke about their roles in the project, the intertwined relationship of art and science, the importance of representation, and their reflections on what the mural means to them. Kishbaugh and Sinopoulos-Lloyd also joined the panel, along with Flowe, who served as a voice for current students. Senior <strong>Madelynn Hamm<\/strong> moderated the discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Horst said they hope the mural continues to honor those who haven\u2019t been recognized for their contributions. \u201cOne of the names on the mural that people are probably most familiar with is Katherine Johnson\u2019s, because of her story being told through the book and film <em>Hidden Figures<\/em>,\u201d Horst said. \u201cI think that made us realize how much we don\u2019t know about how women of color and people from minority identities were involved in a lot of influential work. We don\u2019t get to hear about it because it was overshadowed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program included a message from <strong>Jenny Burden<\/strong>, executive director of the Arts Council of the Valley, on the role that public art plays in shaping a healthy, thriving, and inclusive community. It also included remarks from Mavalvala, who is depicted on the mural but was unable to attend the ceremony.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am honored to be included with so many wonderful luminaries,\u201d Neil said, reading a statement from the astrophysicist. \u201cInclusivity in the sciences is critical, and I\u2019m proud that EMU continues to strive toward this goal.
