{"id":60634,"date":"2026-02-18T14:12:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T19:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=60634"},"modified":"2026-02-18T15:54:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T20:54:20","slug":"a-living-evolving-experiment-in-education-d-c-program-turns-50","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2026\/a-living-evolving-experiment-in-education-d-c-program-turns-50\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018A living, evolving experiment in education\u2019: D.C. program turns 50"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Alumni reunite to share memories, stories from their time in the program<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EMU Washington Semester program started off in the fall of 1976 as a \u201chigh-risk proposition,\u201d recalls <strong>Phil Baker-Shenk \u201979<\/strong>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a high risk for the college, a high risk for us individual students, and certainly a high risk for (program founder and director) <strong>Nelson Good \u201968<\/strong> and <strong>Arden Shank<\/strong>, who staffed it,\u201d said Baker-Shenk, one of the first students in the yearlong program (then known as the Washington Study-Service Year or WSSY) from 1976-77. \u201cIt was a high risk all around, and yet people with good ideas decided to plunge in, take that risk, and make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifty years later, that big gamble has paid off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alumni of the urban studies program\u2014the only such program offered at Anabaptist-affiliated institutions\u2014credit it with giving them improved professional confidence, greater clarity about career direction, more comfort in working with people different than they are, and an increased awareness of systemic injustices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each semester and summer, students from EMU and partner schools such as Bethel College, Bluffton University, and Goshen College converge at the Nelson Good House in the culturally diverse and multiethnic Brookland neighborhood of Washington D.C. It\u2019s there that they learn to live in a shared community, cooking and eating meals together, managing a collective budget and household responsibilities, and navigating conflict with maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students gain real-world professional experience in their chosen field of study through internship placements, study the history and social dynamics of the city, and immerse themselves in the rich culture and vibrancy of the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups\/17250019\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawQC6F9leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETI0UDVoOGl0WVVBR1BORm5Hc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHkgwbxGCbgj9q3h4xVqgw-ybZoTtSI71gS5GkbvuBj8Z9LJNQzxfOQg8-bLg_aem_B05kkA8M7hDt6nTHSE-E4g\"><strong>new LinkedIn group<\/strong><\/a> for alumni of the program.<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Baker-Shenk was among the 60 alumni and supporters of the EMU Washington Semester, from its beginnings in the 1970s through today, who gathered at the Busboys and Poets restaurant in Brookland on Saturday, Feb. 14, to share their memories and experiences from their time in the program and celebrate its 50-year legacy. The milestone reunion included remarks from Program Director <strong>Ryan Good<\/strong>, EMU Interim President <strong>Rev. Dr. Shannon W. They\u2019ve taken courses at and built relationships with institutions such as Catholic University of America and Howard University. And students have learned to live with difference, practice shared leadership, and carry conviction into real work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re celebrating a living, evolving experiment in education,\u201d Dycus told the crowd. \u201cOne that has asked generations of students to take learning seriously enough to put it to work. Since 1976, this program has woven together community living, academic study, and vocational reflection right in the complexity of our nation\u2019s capital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the story\u2019s been told, shared Dycus, Nelson Good came to D.C. as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War era. \u201cAnd, out of that experience, he helped build a program committed to servant leadership and social justice, and an education shaped by peace, responsibility, and courage to see the city as it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nelson Good directed the program until his retirement in 1987, mentoring it through major transitions. She interned at the Ethiopian Community Development Council while taking classes at Howard University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was such a meaningful experience for me because I got on (Howard&#8217;s) campus and I looked like everybody else,\u201d said Wontamo, who is originally from Ethiopia. \u201cThere was another person in our group, I think from Goshen, who was also at Howard, and she was white. We would go to school, and that was the first time she felt like a minority. It was this wonderful experience for both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many alumni of the EMU Washington Semester (it was known as the Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center or WCSC after 2002), Wontamo stayed in the city. The EMU senior, who is double majoring in political science and Spanish, interned at Catholic Charities in its immigration legal services department, where she provided translation, interpretation, and administrative work. She said she hopes to become an immigration lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt definitely solidified what I want to do after college and what type of work I want to do,\u201d she said. \u201cIt solidified my passion for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another EMU senior, <strong>Dia Mekonnen<\/strong>, remembered living at the Nelson Good House with 13 other students during summer 2025. \u201cIt was really packed,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it was really nice to connect with them. It was nice to cook together, to be able to share our perspectives, and we still hang out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/02\/18135308\/IMG_5428-2-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60645\" style=\"width:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/02\/18135308\/IMG_5428-2-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/02\/18135308\/IMG_5428-2-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/02\/18135308\/IMG_5428-2-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/02\/18135308\/IMG_5428-2.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Saturday morning&#8217;s celebration was attended by alumni from each of the past five decades, former directors, and staff members.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Baker-Shenk credited Nelson Good, along with many other heroes, with the courage and vision to implement and sustain the idea of the D.C. program over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the many things he taught me, and it was a little hard for me to take back in the \u201970s, was that institutions deserve our love and our commitment and our care,\u201d he said. \u201cFifty years later, here\u2019s an institution that has carried each of us in this room in one way or another, and it happened because it was nourished and encouraged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><strong>Hear what others had to say<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">At the same time, said <strong>Dawn Longenecker \u201980<\/strong>, who was in the second cohort of the D.C. program (1977-78), Nelson Good also taught students to challenge institutions. \u201cI think he created WSSY as an alternative to the institution that we were all a part of at EMU,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was an alternative place where you could come to the city and really struggle with the systemic forces that were out here, that are still out here, that are wreaking havoc.\u201d<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><strong>Provost Dr. Tynisha Willingham<\/strong> called the D.C. program a distinctive of the EMU experience: \u201cWe\u2019ve been able to partner with other universities because so many have moved away from doing this work in the city. But yet, we continue to do the work. We continue to support students. He told guests there were many ways to support the program. One such opportunity is through the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/d-c-program-renames-scholarship-after-longtime-director\/\">Dr. Kimberly Schmidt Endowed Scholarship<\/a><\/strong>, which was dedicated during the program\u2019s on-campus reunion at Homecoming 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFinancial aid is such a critical part of the story for every student, and it\u2019s an obstacle,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s an obstacle to participation in this program and others.
