Other Anabaptist values deeply rooted in EMU include simplicity, justice and mercy, environmental stewardship, and care for the oppressed and impoverished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B is for Baristas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If caffeine is what keeps the world running, then the baristas who brew the coffees, teas, and specialty drinks at the student-run Common Grounds Coffeehouse are the quiet force fueling campus, one cup at a time. The comfy couches and cozy atmosphere make this gathering place the go-to spot on campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C is for CJP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EMU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>, respected globally for its academic excellence and practitioner-based programming, offers master&#8217;s degrees in conflict transformation, restorative justice, and transformational leadership; training in trauma resilience; and a <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/spi\/\">Summer Peacebuilding Institute<\/a>. Students gain meaningful, hands-on experience in their fields through internships thoughtfully matched to align with their academic focus and career goals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">E is for Experiential learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of transformative programs and hands-on experience, EMU&#8217;s unique experiential <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/intercultural\/\">intercultural learning opportunities<\/a> prioritize immersion and mutual engagement with people from different cultural backgrounds. Graduates call their intercultural experiences &#8220;life-changing,&#8221; giving them the foundation they need as lifelong learners in a global context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">F is for Forward Together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest comprehensive campaign in school history, <em>Forward Together: Preparing Tomorrow\u2019s Unifying Leaders (2023-2028) <\/em>aims to raise $40 million for &#8220;people, programs and facilities&#8221; by 2028. <em>Learn more and give now at <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/campaign\"><strong>emu.edu\/campaign<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">G is for Gehman Gallery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Named for the late <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/a-royal-tale-speedy-margaret-martin-gehman-42-set-the-pace-for-giving-at-emu\/\">professor emeritus<\/a>, the 31-by-21-foot Margaret Martin Gehman Art Gallery is a beautifully designed and illuminated space for students, faculty, staff, and guest artists to exhibit their work. Where did the name come from? The following excerpt is from a <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/2020\/12\/15\/welcome-herm-v-a-little-hermstory\/\">2020 article<\/a> in <em>Crossroads<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>1981: <\/strong>Alumni relations director<strong> Les Helmuth \u201878<\/strong> holds a student competition to create a cartoon mascot. The Royals Lion wins the competition, and a character design is first drawn by <strong>Darrell Yoder \u201881<\/strong> with the name \u201cHRM,\u201d short for \u201chis royal majesty.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I is for IEP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EMU&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/iep\">Intensive English Program<\/a> helps English language learners from all around the world find their voice and build a better life for themselves. In April, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/emus-jesse-longenecker-crowned-national-champion-of-college-disc-golf\/\">Jesse Longenecker<\/a><\/strong>, then a first-year student from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, won the 2025 College Disc Golf National Championship, helping place EMU disc golf on the national radar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">K is for Kindness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kindness is central to who EMU is. The <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/dei\/\">DEI team<\/a> at EMU is driven by the vision to co-create a community of learners where everyone feels connected, accepted, valued, and respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L is for Lancaster<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>About 220 miles northeast of Harrisonburg, <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/lancaster\/\">EMU Lancaster<\/a>&nbsp;offers undergraduate and graduate academic programs and professional development programs to help students excel in today&#8217;s workforce.  Whether students are training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, learning to fly airplanes, earning an instructional certification or degree in education, or advancing their careers with a leadership certificate or degree, the Lancaster team is ready to support them in achieving their goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M is for Music and peacebuilding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first-of-its-kind music and peacebuilding major, available only at EMU, trains students to creatively transform conflict by using music to build common ground, facilitate healing, and create a space of storytelling. It&#8217;s a favorite spot for students, faculty, staff\u2014and Interim President <strong>Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus<\/strong>\u2014seeking tranquility. The summit is also home to the new state-of-the-art <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/sanctuary-of-sound\/\">Astral Recording Studio<\/a> (1304 Hillcrest Drive), which opened at the start of the fall semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">P is for Promise Grant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 76 first- and second-year EMU students have access to an exceptional, tuition-free college education through the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/keeping-its-promise-emu-expands-tuition-free-initiative-to-even-more-students\/\">EMU Promise Grant<\/a>. She was one of only 32 students in the U.S. selected from nearly 3,000 applicants to receive the 2025 Rhodes Scholarship. Our library draws power from the first-installed commercial-scale solar installation in the state.
