{"id":59978,"date":"2025-10-27T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=59978"},"modified":"2025-10-24T16:33:35","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T20:33:35","slug":"a-part-of-the-journey-ceremony-honors-trio-of-summer-iep-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/a-part-of-the-journey-ceremony-honors-trio-of-summer-iep-graduates\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A part of the journey&#8217;: Ceremony honors trio of summer IEP graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Jeremy Samsoe <\/strong>likened the latest crop of graduates from EMU\u2019s Intensive English Program (IEP) to travelers on a road trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the goals of a road trip is to reach your destination, but that\u2019s not its only purpose, said Samsoe, director of IEP, speaking at the program\u2019s graduation ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 23, in Martin Chapel. Oftentimes, the purpose of a road trip is to see exciting things along the way, meet new people, and learn things that you didn\u2019t know before, he explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit like your experience here,\u201d Samsoe said. \u201cAnd I would say that your time at IEP isn\u2019t actually the road trip but a part of your road trip\u2014a step toward some of the bigger goals you have in your life. Completing IEP isn\u2019t your destination, but it\u2019s a part of the journey to whatever destination you have planned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thursday\u2019s ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of three graduates who completed Level 6, the highest level of classes offered at IEP, during the summer 2025 term. These graduates, who hail from different countries, languages, and cultures, burst into laughter and fought back tears as they described how meaningful the program has been in their lives. They received graduation certificates and stoles, each emblazoned with both the flag of their home country and the U.S. flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summer 2025 IEP graduates, along with their home countries, are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Kensly Cassy<\/strong>, Haiti<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Olga Lara<\/strong>, Mexico<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kateryna Zharkova<\/strong>, Ukraine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Those attending the ceremony included <strong>Tynisha Willingham<\/strong>, EMU\u2019s provost and vice president of academic affairs; <strong>Jon Swartz<\/strong>, dean of students; the graduates\u2019 friends and family members; and students enrolled in IEP. Following the graduation ceremony, she described feeling \u201coverwhelmed\u201d with emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEach person at IEP is really important to me,\u201d she said. \u201cThey became my family. I have improved my English language and it\u2019s helped a lot with my goals for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have inspired me to keep learning, growing, and discovering new things,\u201d Zharkova said in a speech to her teachers. \u201cThank you for always making learning exciting and for your patience and for believing in me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Intensive English Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EMU&#8217;s Intensive English Program (IEP) helps English language learners from all around the world find their voice and build a better life for themselves.
