He presented his research, titled \u201cA Novel, Highly Sensitive, Rapid, and Cost-Effective Test for the Early Detection of Cancer,\u201d at the meeting\u2019s undergraduate student caucus and poster competition on April 26, alongside students from top universities around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sefin\u2019s project focuses on developing an innovative method to aid in the early detection of cancer. His approach targets a specific protein, commonly overexpressed across various cancer types. By binding antibodies targeting this protein to a specific nanomaterial, he designed a test that detects protein concentrations in whole blood samples with high sensitivity and accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to build something meaningful, something that might one day help change how quickly, affordably, and accurately we can detect cancer,\u201d Sefin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work, developed over five years, earned internal recognition through EMU\u2019s Kauffman &amp; Miller Research Award and drew support from professors and researchers at top institutions. Sefin is also a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, a distinction granted based on the strength of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis experience taught me that meaningful science doesn\u2019t begin with perfection\u060c it begins with persistence,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m proud of what\u2019s been built so far, and I\u2019m even more excited about what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>This article has been edited to accurately describe the project.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One science-minded senior is showcasing EMU\u2019s brand of academic excellence on the world stage.
