{"id":58016,"date":"2025-01-17T09:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T14:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=58016"},"modified":"2025-01-17T14:03:08","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T19:03:08","slug":"nine-students-complete-dc-internships-at-wcsc-over-fall-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/nine-students-complete-dc-internships-at-wcsc-over-fall-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine students complete DC internships at WCSC over fall 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Six Eastern Mennonite University students, two Bethel College students and one Bluffton University student gained professional experience last fall at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/wcsc\/\">Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/a>&nbsp;(WCSC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center, located in the nation\u2019s capital since 1976, is a program of Eastern Mennonite University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The semester-long experience is also a community-building endeavor, with students living together in the Nelson Good House in the Brookland neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C. The semester\u2019s placements included several organizations that are longtime hosts of EMU students, highlighting WCSC\u2019s deep ties within the region. Many alumni can trace their careers back to a pivotal experience at WCSC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn more about the students, their placements and the organizations they were involved with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"165\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120701\/unnamed-6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58028\" style=\"width:150px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Ella Brubaker<\/strong>, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was an advocacy intern with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawg.org\/\">Latin America Working Group<\/a>. She assisted staff with main campaigns by helping with social media, writing news alerts, assisting with research, attending meetings with human rights defenders, and supporting any events planned by the organization. His most significant learning experience was in helping young artists grow as well as learning to appreciate various aspects of life through photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"523\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120011\/Andrew.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58022\" style=\"width:150px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120011\/Andrew.jpeg 523w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120011\/Andrew-230x300.jpeg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Andrew Graber<\/strong>, of Divide, Colorado, was a marketing intern for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mannahomes.org\/\">Manna Inc.<\/a> Some of the projects he worked on last semester included marketing outreach materials and events. He said his most significant learning experience was in learning how to navigate new spaces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLearning how to be confident without being cocky, bold but not mean, and comfortable while still being aware of those around you is an important skill no matter where you go,\u201d the Bethel College student said. \u201cThis will help shape how I approach new spaces for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"622\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120346\/Sara.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58025\" style=\"width:150px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120346\/Sara.jpeg 622w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120346\/Sara-230x300.jpeg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Sara Kennel<\/strong>, of Souderton, Pennsylvania, was a climate justice intern with the <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/staff-and-volunteers\">Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns<\/a>. She constructed\u00a0 newsletters, participated in NYC Climate Week, wrote action alerts, collaborated to organize climate awareness demonstrations and attended global webinars. She said her most significant learning experience was in gaining a better understanding of Catholic social teaching and learning how to build connections with other organizations working to collaborate effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"130\" height=\"170\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120243\/unnamed-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58024\" style=\"width:150px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>ML Lormejuste<\/strong>, of Fairfax, Virginia, was a health care policy and advocacy intern with <a href=\"https:\/\/younginvincibles.org\/\">Young Invincibles<\/a>. He created blogs and advocated on issues facing young adults from ages 24-34, bringing awareness to issues not only to the public, but also to senators and representatives. She said her most significant learning experience was in learning how to organize the community to help fight for change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"156\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/01\/10120503\/unnamed-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58026\" style=\"width:150px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Eli Regier<\/strong>, of Newton, Kansas, was placed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gonzaga.org\/\">Gonzaga College High School<\/a>\u2019s student-teaching music department. He taught band, orchestra, percussion, jazz band and AP music theory. Thompson<\/strong>, of Broadway, Virginia, was with the <a href=\"https:\/\/osse.dc.gov\/page\/charles-sumner-school-museum-and-archives\">Charles Sumner School Museum and Archive<\/a>, where she worked on projects including yearbook inventory, Western High School history and inventory, artifact care and management and oral history.
