Nate Derstine \u201810 biology graduate<\/strong>, conducted research during two and a half years of college with Dr. Roman Miller<\/a>, professor of biology<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His goal was to determine the effects of Genestein \u2013 a phytoestrogen compound found in soy \u2013 on male reproductive development in mice.<\/p>\n

Derstine\u2019s studies confirmed the hypothesis that phytoestrogens have detrimental effects on sperm production and maturation. He discovered decreased numbers of mature spermatozoa, and increased numbers of immature sperm cells.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurther research needs to be conducted to determine the relevance of these findings for humans,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n

Continuing work in research<\/h3>\n

Currently Nate continues to work for EMU associate professor of chemistry, Dr. Matthew Siderhurst<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Siderhurst received a grant for research related to fruit-piercing moths at The Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center in Hawaii.<\/p>\n

Learning \u2018what it takes to make real science happen\u2019<\/h3>\n

\u201cMy relationships with both Dr. Miller and Dr. Siderhurst have been beneficial,” reflects Derstine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey trusted me so much and gave me autonomy to work on these projects.
