A reception at 4:30 will precede the lecture. He is a historian of American culture, technology, foreign policy and the environment. The author of numerous articles and two books, including the co-authored<em> Hollywood Goes to War: How Politics, Profits, and Propaganda Shaped World War II Movies<\/em> (University of California Press, 1990), he is now writing a history of HIV\/AIDS in the U.S.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Koppes graduated from Bethel College, then earned an MA from Emory University and a PhD with honors from the University of Kansas, both in history. At Bethel, he was a student of Professor Keith Sprunger , father of EMU history professor and Keim Lecture committee member <strong>Mary Sprunger<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Professor Koppes will provide insights about an important era in U.S. history,\u201d Sprunger said. \u201cToday\u2019s students should know how the stigmatization of AIDS, due to the initial spread of the new disease among the gay community, hampered effective and compassionate public health and religious response to the epidemic. I&#8217;m excited\u2013but also disheartened\u2013about the way that this topic connects to current events, such as the covid pandemic, monkey pox, and the Club Q shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Koppes earned Bethel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oberlin.edu\/news\/clayton-koppes-receives-distinguished-achievement-award\">Distinguished Achievement Award<\/a> from his alma mater in 2018. The award acknowledges character and citizenship, achievement in a chosen profession or vocation, and work of benefit to humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other professional leadership roles, Koppes has served as president of the American Society for Environmental History and was a founding member of Oberlin\u2019s innovative Environmental Studies program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More on the Keim Lecture Series<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Albert N. Keim Lecture Series honors the memory of Professor Albert N. Keim who served as a history professor at EMU for 35 years and was the academic dean from 1977 to 1984. The inaugural lecture in 2013 featured leading historian Peter N. Hard?\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020:<\/strong> Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/peace-scholar-to-offer-keim-lecture-on-predicting-genocide-and-mass-atrocities\/\"><strong>Ernesto Verdeja<\/strong><\/a>, of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at University of Notre Dame, was the speaker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong> Federal public defender, immigrant rights attorney and playwright <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/borders-jails-and-long-drives-in-the-desert-immigrant-rights-attorney-kara-hartzler-94-to-present-keim-lecture\/\"><strong>Kara Hartzler \u201994<\/strong><\/a> spoke on \u201cBorders, Jails, and Long Drives in the Desert: 25 Years of Immigration Law in the Southwest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/scholar-china-offers-keim-lecture-maos-cultural-revolution-really-disaster\/\">Dongping Han<\/a>, professor at Warren-Wilson College and a native of rural China, addressed \u201cThe Cultural Revolution: A Reinterpretation from Today\u2019s China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> Artist\/activist <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/02\/artist-activist-connects-communities-in-and-out-of-prison-with-bold-public-art-projects\/\">Mark Strandquist<\/a> provided a lecture titled <strong>\u201c<\/strong>Performing Statistics: Connecting incarcerated youth, artists, and leading policy experts to challenge Virginia\u2019s juvenile justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/02\/expert-on-racial-profiling-by-law-enforcement-officers-to-speak-at-emu\/\">Charles R.
