{"id":52048,"date":"2022-05-04T12:56:32","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T16:56:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=52048"},"modified":"2022-05-05T10:23:36","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T14:23:36","slug":"emu-honors-awards-and-recognitions-2021-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2022\/emu-honors-awards-and-recognitions-2021-22\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU Honors, Awards and Recognitions &#8211; 2021-22"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 100 Eastern Mennonite University students were recognized for accomplishments and achievements during the 2021-22 academic year during a special recognition ceremony Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EasternMennonite\/videos\/1472085636506389\"><strong>View the livestream recording<\/strong>.<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Academics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Academic Success Center<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Seniors who worked as tutors were recognized: <strong>Rodrigo Barahona, Jonas Beachy, Ben Bontrager-Singer, Garrett Cash, Tarynn Clark, Erin Clayton, Elizabeth Eby, Ike Esh, Ben Greenleaf, Mary Harnish, Tasia Hoover, Caleb Hostetler, Brenda Kasongo, Nicole Miller, Sara Beth Mumbauer, Jake Myers, Andrea Troyer, Laura Troyer, Jason Wong, Eli Wright, Teo Yoder, Janessa Zimmerman, <\/strong>and<strong> Verda Zook<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Bible and Religion<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual Haverim* writing awards are given to students whose essays demonstrate robust scholarship related in one way or another to biblical studies, religion, philosophy, and\/or Anabaptist\/Mennonite thought and practice. Elementary Education, PreK-6.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gage Riddick<\/strong> was selected by department faculty for the annual Courage to Teach Award, modeled after principles in Parker Palmer\u2019s book of the same name. Department faculty selected Gage for his&nbsp; dedication and success in teaching, her genuine caring for students, reflective practice, highly principled behaviors, and her courage to navigate challenging experiences. He was presented with a copy of Palmer\u2019s book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMU faculty selected <strong>Skylar Hedgepeth<\/strong> for the Virginia Woman\u2019s Scholar Award from the Virginia State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The award is for an outstanding graduate with the promise of being a key woman educator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Language and Literature<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following students earned awards and scholarships, many of which are in memory of valued professors who provided powerful examples of mentorship, scholarship and teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Sarah Bascom<\/strong> is the winner of the Carroll Yoder Award for Teaching Excellence, which honors an EMU senior or junior who has demonstrated academic excellence in both literary studies and education courses and has shown a clear call to the teaching profession.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Claire Whetzel<\/strong> earned the Ray Elvin Horst Award for excellence in Spanish.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Jessamine Domingo <\/strong>earned the Ervie L. Glick Award for excellence in world language study.<\/li><li><strong>Claire Whetzel <\/strong>is awarded the Omar Eby Writing Award. This award is presented to a senior majoring or minoring in writing studies who demonstrates excellence in the craft of creative writing and who provides insightful critique and support for other writers in creative workshops.<\/li><li><strong>Neo Carter <\/strong>was awarded the Omar and Anna Kathryn Eby Scholarshi<strong>p.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Sarah Bascom <\/strong>and <strong>Tiffany Carey <\/strong>were awarded the Hubert R. and Mildred Pellman Scholarship.<\/li><li><strong>Karla Hostetter <\/strong>was awarded the Leroy Pellman\/Elizabeth Lauver Scholarship<strong>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Jessica Chisolm <\/strong>and<strong> Joseph Whetzel <\/strong>were awarded the Esther Eby Glass Scholarship.<\/li><li><strong>Hannah Landis<\/strong>, <strong>Maria Menjivar<\/strong>, and <strong>Lucy Unzicker <\/strong>were awarded the Ernest G. Gehman Scholarship.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Mathematics<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><em>Engineering and Computer Science<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Jonas Beachy <\/strong>and <strong>Laura Troyer<\/strong>: Outstanding Seniors in Engineering Award, awarded by the faculty as the highest honor for the graduate\/s demonstrating academic excellence, service, and contributions to community and culture at EMU.<\/li><li><strong>Ike Esh<\/strong> and <strong>Hannah Leaman<\/strong>: Outstanding Seniors in Mathematics Award, awarded by the faculty as the highest honor for the graduate demonstrating academic excellence, service, and contributions to community and culture at EMU.<\/li><li><strong>Isaac Andreas<\/strong> and <strong>Trajon Brown<\/strong>: Outstanding Seniors in Computer Science Award, awarded by the faculty as the highest honor for the graduate demonstrating academic excellence, service, and contributions to community and culture at EMU.<\/li><li><strong>Ike Esh<\/strong> won EMU\u2019s annual math competition.<\/li><li>Winners of the Kryptos international codebreaking competition, out of 77 teams, were <strong>Hannah Leaman, Caleb Hostetler<\/strong> and <strong>Mana Acosta<\/strong>. <em>Look for news coverage soon!<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Music<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two students were honored with the Outstanding Student in Music Award for leadership, service, music performance and music scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eve Yavny<\/strong> has served as concertmaster of the EMU Chamber Orchestra, is a two-time winner of the EMU concerto competition, and gave an excellent senior recital performance. She has distinguished herself as a teacher and assistant in the Shenandoah Valley Preparatory Program as well as performed in countless university and department events. \u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Isaac Longacre<\/strong> distinguished himself throughout his career at EMU with exceptional performances in four EMU musical theater productions, playing iconic roles from a villain to a hero in &#8220;Shrek,&#8221; &#8220;Beauty and the Beast,&#8221; &#8220;U2 Romeo and Juliet,&#8221; and &#8220;Noye&#8217;s Fludde.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Political Science<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paige Hurley<\/strong> was named the History and Political Science Outstanding Student. She was recognized for exemplary service, as the student assistant for the program, and scholarship, with\u00a0 research published in <em>New Errands, <\/em>the online publication of the Eastern American Studies Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Psychology<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Avery Trinh and Katie Zuercher<\/strong> were both awarded the Galen R. Lehman Outstanding Achievement in Research Award. Both had exceptional designs, data collection and interpretation of results. Katie\u2019s research was on the survival processing paradigm for first person shooter video games and Avery worked with EMU Institutional Research on a survey about belonging.<\/li><li><strong>Joshua Wenger<\/strong> and <strong>Lindsay Green <\/strong>received the Judy H. Mullet Award for Internship Excellence, for their outstanding and consistent performance in psychology internship with exceptional independent work in establishing a unique field placement experience with Sentara Behavioral Health and Outpatient Center and the Community Care and Learning Center, respectively.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Campus Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Campus Activities Council<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Natallie Brown, Isaac Andreas, Thomas Erickson, Aliyyah Haggard<\/strong>, <strong>Ashley Schoenhardt<\/strong> and <strong>Jeremiah Yoder<\/strong> for the CAC All-Star Award. Criteria includes volunteering over 200 hours or working more than 350 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Office of Faith and Spiritual Life<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following students were recognized for leadership as student chaplains, nurturing faith and spiritual life in various ways: <strong>Micah Buckwalter<\/strong>, sustainability; <strong>Alyssa Breidigan<\/strong>, worship; <strong>Natallie Brown<\/strong>, discipleship; <strong>Elizabeth Eby<\/strong>, engagement; <strong>Kate Landis<\/strong>, worship; <strong>Emma Nord<\/strong>, community; <strong>Reah Clymer<\/strong>, community; and <strong>Halie Mast<\/strong>, service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Center for Interfaith Engagement<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Philip Krabill <\/strong>and <strong>Leah Walker <\/strong>were recognized for offering opportunities in fall and spring, respectively, helping to create spaces on campus for engagement around issues of religious diversity and justice.
