Schmidt<\/strong> is the 2022 speaker for the Albert N.&nbsp;Keim&nbsp;Lecture&nbsp;Series, sponsored by Eastern Mennonite University&#8217;s history and political science programs. She speaks Monday, March 21, at 5 p.m. in Swartzendruber Hall, Room 106, in the Suter Science Center. A light reception precedes the event at 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event is free and open to the public. Masks are optional. The event will be livestreamed on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EasternMennonite\/\">EMU&#8217;s Facebook Live page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schmidt&#8217;s topic is &#8220;Marketing Mennonites, Posing Cheyennes: Photography, Gender, and Indigenous Agency on the Mission Field (1880-1920).&#8221; She will share an extensive collection of stunning photographs taken of Cheyenne people by Mennonite missionaries. The collection reveals troubling intersectionalities of gender constructions, forced acculturation, religion, and U.S. policy on the Cheyenne Mennonite missions at the turn of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schmidt is the former director of EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/wcsc\">Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/a>, a position she held for 23 years. She continues to serve EMU as an affiliate professor of gender history. Schmidt earned a PhD in American history from Binghamton University in 1995. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schmidt&#8217;s novel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/unmpress.com\/books\/magpies-blanket\/9780826356321\">Magpie\u2019s Blanket<\/a> (<\/em>New Mexico State University Press, 2016) was a Women Writing the West WILLA Literary Awards Finalist, historical fiction category. She has also published<a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.jhu.edu\/books\/title\/2398\/strangers-home\"> <em>Strangers at Home: Amish and Mennonite Women in History<\/em><\/a> (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Read more about Schmidt&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/magpies-blanket-novel-professor-kimberly-schmidt-named-willa-literary-award-finalist\/\">award-winning novel <em>Magpie&#8217;s Blanket<\/em><\/a> and her <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/kimberly-schmidt-drawn-cheyenne-history-surrounding-novel-magpies-blanket\/\">interest in Cheyenne history and culture<\/a>.<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Walks at Dawn Speaks, <\/em>a second work of historical fiction, centers on Monahsetah, also known as Meotzi, a young woman claimed by both the Southern and Northern Cheyenne nations. Monahsetah became Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custers\u2019 mistress, guide, peace envoy and cultural bridge builder during the Plains Indian Wars. Southern Cheyenne cultural interpreters are currently reviewing the manuscript.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schmidt&#8217;s fourth book project focuses on Bertha Kinsinger Petter, a Mennonite missionary to both Southern and Northern Cheyennes from 1896-1963, and how Mennonite constructions of gender and women\u2019s work on the mission supported U.S. government assimilationist and cultural annihilation policies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is preparing to lead <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/intercultural\/programs\/womens-west\">A Women\u2019s West: Exploring Native American Women\u2019s History and Culture<\/a>, a three-week EMU intercultural tour of the American Southwest, this summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More on the Keim Lecture Series<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Albert N. Keim Lecture Series honors the memory of Professor Albert N. Hard?\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020:<\/strong> Professor\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/peace-scholar-to-offer-keim-lecture-on-predicting-genocide-and-mass-atrocities\/\">Ernesto Verdeja<\/a><\/strong>, of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at University of Notre Dame, was the speaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong>&nbsp;Federal public defender, immigrant rights attorney and playwright&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/borders-jails-and-long-drives-in-the-desert-immigrant-rights-attorney-kara-hartzler-94-to-present-keim-lecture\/\">Kara Hartzler \u201994<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;spoke on \u201cBorders, Jails, and Long Drives in the Desert: 25 Years of Immigration Law in the Southwest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/scholar-china-offers-keim-lecture-maos-cultural-revolution-really-disaster\/\">Dongping Han<\/a>, professor at Warren-Wilson College and a native of rural China, addressed \u201cThe Cultural Revolution: A Reinterpretation from Today\u2019s China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong>&nbsp;Artist\/activist&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/02\/artist-activist-connects-communities-in-and-out-of-prison-with-bold-public-art-projects\/\">Mark Strandquist<\/a>&nbsp;provided a lecture titled&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Performing Statistics: Connecting incarcerated youth, artists, and leading policy experts to challenge Virginia\u2019s juvenile justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/02\/expert-on-racial-profiling-by-law-enforcement-officers-to-speak-at-emu\/\">Charles R.
