{"id":51495,"date":"2022-03-03T10:20:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T15:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=51495"},"modified":"2022-05-27T12:56:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T16:56:56","slug":"cousins-authors-return-to-harrisonburg-emu-where-their-journey-of-racial-reconciliation-began","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2022\/cousins-authors-return-to-harrisonburg-emu-where-their-journey-of-racial-reconciliation-began\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Cousins\u2019 authors return to Harrisonburg, EMU where their journey of racial reconciliation began"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Betty Kilby Baldwin<\/strong> and <strong>Phoebe Kilby<\/strong> have told their remarkable story of reconciliation and reparation 37 times in seven months across the country, with features in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/maryland\/anne-arundel\/bs-md-coming-to-the-table-20190121-story.html\"><em>The Baltimore Sun<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=O7XQVpgTfOw\">BBC News<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/comingtothetable.org\/netflix-features-cttt-member-baldwin\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=netflix-features-cttt-member-baldwin\">Netflix documentary<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, the co-authors of <a href=\"https:\/\/walnutstreetbooks.com\/titles\/cousins\/\">\u201cCousins: Connected Through Slavery\u201d<\/a> (Walnut Street Books, 2021) visit Harrisonburg to share more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eastern Mennonite University is a special place to both women; it\u2019s where they met in a five-day class titled \u201cComing to the Table,\u201d during the 2007 Summer Peacebuilding Institute. Kilby holds a graduate certificate in conflict transformation and was the former first advancement director for CJP. Their connection continued through the development of the CTTT organization; its goal is to bring together descendants of slave owners and enslaved people to talk about racial reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their new book gives space for each woman to tell her story \u2014 Betty\u2019s experience as one of the first Black children to attend a desegregated school in Rappahannock County, Phoebe\u2019s desire to repair harms after a privileged life, the story of their meeting and ongoing work together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ll talk about all of this and answer questions from the audience at two events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On Wednesday, March 23, at 10:10 a.m. in Lehman Auditorium at EMU, Baldwin and Kilby will speak at a convocation in honor of Women\u2019s History Month. Masks are optional. This event will be livestreamed on <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/EasternMennonite\/live\">EMU\u2019s Facebook Live page<\/a>. [You do not need to be a member of Facebook to watch.]<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On Thursday, March 24, from 7-8:30 p.m., Massanutten Regional Library hosts an author event. <a href=\"https:\/\/mrlib.org\/news-events\/events\/adults.html\/event\/2022\/03\/24\/reaching-across-the-racial-divide\/371734\">Registration and masks are required<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The talks are sponsored by EMU, as well as the university\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>. Kilby earned a graduate certificate in conflict transformation from the center in 2004 and worked as the center\u2019s first development associate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She and Baldwin met through the racial reconciliation organization <a href=\"https:\/\/comingtothetable.org\/\">Coming to the Table<\/a>, which started at EMU in 2006 and continues today as a program of Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth.
