{"id":49081,"date":"2021-04-15T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=49081"},"modified":"2021-05-04T14:41:50","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T18:41:50","slug":"student-scientists-receive-2021-summer-research-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2021\/student-scientists-receive-2021-summer-research-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Student-scientists receive 2021 summer research grants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/stem\/research-opportunities\">Explore opportunities in undergraduate student research at EMU.<\/a><\/strong><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven EMU students heading to careers in science and medicine have earned funding for summer research, provided by the Kauffman-Miller Research Awards and the CT Assist Summer Experiential Learning Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased that we can work with such a large group of students this summer, since these opportunities were so limited last summer.\u201d said<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=cessnas\"> <strong>Stephen Cessna<\/strong><\/a>, a biochemistry professor who holds the Daniel B. (EMU file photo)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>* <strong>Theo Yoder<\/strong> and <strong>Nicole Miller<\/strong> will travel to Hawaii with Professor <strong>Matt Siderhurst<\/strong> to develop and assess new methods of tropical agricultural pest control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<strong> Rebekah Amstutz<\/strong> will work with Professor <strong>Jim Yoder <\/strong>on an investigation of the possibility of institutional nitrogen tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kauffman-Miller Research Awards are named for emeritus professors Glenn Kauffman (chemistry) and Roman Miller (biology), each of whom were \u201cchampions of undergraduate involvement in authentic scientific research at EMU,\u201d said Cessna. \u201cThese awards from the Daniel B. Suter Endowment Fund provide opportunities for biology, chemistry and environmental science students to build the key skills of scientific inquiry from writing the proposal to presenting and potentially publishing their findings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over their 30-plus year tenures, Kauffman and Miller each worked with more than 40 undergraduates on research projects ranging in topics from organic blueberry production to the synthesis of new cyclic organic compounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/04\/14164823\/37267963_10155656590627361_8922552909695025152_n-300x225-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49087\"\/><figcaption><strong>Xavier McCants gives a child medication in Peru. His 2018 travels were funded by the CT Assist Health Experiential Learning Program.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/pphs\/ct-assist\"> CT Assist Health Experiential Learning Program<\/a> awards funds to pre-professional health science students at EMU to support clinical experiences that help prepare students for professional health programs.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ct-assist.com\/\"> CT Assist<\/a> is a Harrisonburg-based healthcare staffing business owned by two alumni.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, funds from CT Assist\u2019s program have supported overseas clinical experiences [read about<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/seven-weeks-in-peru-ct-assist-awards-fund-student-explorations-of-health-care-delivery\/\"> 2018<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/summer-kauffman-miller-research-awards-and-ct-assist-experiential-grant-recipients-announced\/\">2019<\/a>].
