{"id":46979,"date":"2020-09-07T15:59:13","date_gmt":"2020-09-07T19:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=46979"},"modified":"2020-09-08T12:09:13","modified_gmt":"2020-09-08T16:09:13","slug":"move-in-weekend-2020-royals-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/move-in-weekend-2020-royals-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Move-in Weekend 2020: Royals return!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br \/>After a bit of a wait, Eastern Mennonite University sophomore <strong>Abby Olmstead<\/strong> is finally on campus and she is \u201cpumped to be back,\u201d she said. \u201cMy favorite thing about EMU is its welcoming atmosphere, and that has not changed even amidst all of the chaos happening in the world right now. It\u2019s amazing to see everyone again, even if I can only see two-thirds of their faces!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This weekend marked a big moment for EMU\u2019s first-year students, transitioning into college life. The Class of 2024 is the largest in four years and includes students from 15 states and seven countries, said <strong>Jason Good<\/strong>, vice president for innovation and recruitment. A few other key stats: The top five majors are nursing, biology, business administration, computer science and engineering. Nearly 30 percent identify as first-generation college students. And they enter with an average GPA of 3.67.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olmstead, a Broadway resident, was one of many returning students thrilled to be back together again after months of pandemic separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe last few days have been full of happy reunions,\u201d said junior <strong>Jessie Landis<\/strong>, a Community Assistant in Parkwoods Apartments. \u201cMany of us have not seen our friends in person since March, so even though we could not all give each other hugs, we have \u2018embraced\u2019 each other with joyous shouting and waving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately 42 Residence Life staff, including full-time professional staff and those who are students like Landis, are helping nearly 450 residential students transition into a new world of protocols designed with the aim of all-campus health and wellness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20200905-Move-in-Weekend-34-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20200905-Move-in-Weekend-34-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20200905-Move-in-Weekend-34-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20200905-Move-in-Weekend-34-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20200905-Move-in-Weekend-34-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20200905-Move-in-Weekend-34-2048x1364.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Move-in this year, usually a fun, but hectic, one-day experience, was carefully scheduled over four days. With arrival delayed by two weeks due to cautions over a handful of positive COVID tests, <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/weekend-events-offer-virtual-welcome-for-new-returning-royals\/\">many of the planned in-person activities happened in the virtual space<\/a>. Before their arrival, students participated in several online events, including a mandatory training that outlined the new campus health protocols and processes.&nbsp;<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dean of Students <strong>Shannon Dycus<\/strong> was excited to welcome students after months of preparation and the additional two-week delay. \u201cAs we live into community and our \u2018COVID Commitments,\u2019 our health protocols become the highest priority to continue enjoying this privilege of being together,\u201d she said, reflecting on the weekend. All students, faculty and staff are required to access the online symptom tracker daily. The green dot means no symptoms are reported. Students attended activities in \u201chousehold groups&#8221; (aka &#8220;pods&#8221;).  These students share common areas within residence halls and apartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Asha Beck<\/strong>, a junior CA in Parkwoods, said the Campus Activities Council activities attracted new and returning students. \u201cI think there was even a small jam session that broke out between a couple of new students,\u201d she added. Campus Activities Council hosted this event and offered free Tropical Smoothies to those who came to listen to the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert closed out CAC activities for the weekend, but the CAs continue their plans to build community within the new physical distancing protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beck and Landis are sharing CA responsibilities this semester because of their courseload and other involvements around campus. The duo are excited for the coming year as they get to know Parkwoods residents and new students who bring \u201c fresh energy and perspectives.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know that this is said every year, but we really do have an incredible group of CAs this year,\u201d Beck said. \u201cI am so excited to work together with them to get creative about programming and ways of interacting together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now back to <strong>Abby Olmstead<\/strong> for some final words.
