{"id":46515,"date":"2020-07-15T10:47:34","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T14:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=46515"},"modified":"2020-08-04T14:22:38","modified_gmt":"2020-08-04T18:22:38","slug":"from-jamaica-to-the-uk-spis-online-move-expands-global-access-to-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/from-jamaica-to-the-uk-spis-online-move-expands-global-access-to-training\/","title":{"rendered":"From Jamaica to the UK, SPI\u2019s online move expands global access to training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\">Summer Peacebuilding Institute<\/a> (SPI) moved online this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it lost some of the aspects that attract people to the Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) program each summer, like in-person networking and conversations shared over meals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/spi-online-2020-holds-fast-to-community-building-traditions\/\">Read about SPI 2020&#8217;s unique online community-building efforts.<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>But it also opened the door for many to attend who otherwise couldn&#8217;t due to travelling and attendance costs, visa complications, and work commitments, said SPI director <strong>Bill Goldberg<\/strong>. \u201cSPI is known for dialogue and deep conversations and our initial feedback from participants and professors suggests that the online format was a place where that still happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, over 180 participants from 27 different countries tuned in to SPI sessions via video conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>SPI is known for dialogue and deep conversations and our initial feedback from participants and professors suggests that the online format was a place where that still happened. <\/p><cite>Bill Goldberg, SPI director<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>For a few groups, the online format and lowered cost allowed them to enroll an entire team. The Jamaica Mennonite Conference sent four pastors to SPI, sponsored by a grant from the C.P. and Izetta Yoder Mission Endowment Fund administered by Everence. <strong>Clyde Kratz<\/strong>, executive conference minister of Virginia Mennonite Conference, applied for the funding to assist in equipping Jamaican church leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kratz said he saw an opportunity for the pastors to apply the SPI courses to both their secular jobs and pastoral assignments.&nbsp;Many of the pastors in the conference also work in area schools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In my conversation with a number of pastors in Jamaica, I learned about their vocational endeavors in the school system and I believed that SPI\u2019s educational components could benefit their work associated with the school as well as the congregation,&#8221; Kratz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/IMG-20200122-WA0041.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46536\" width=\"305\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/IMG-20200122-WA0041.jpg 903w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/IMG-20200122-WA0041-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/IMG-20200122-WA0041-768x653.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><figcaption>Dillion and Esther Sinclair, of Kingston, Jamaica.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dillion Sinclair<\/strong> is a primary school guidance counselor. He and his wife, Esther, lead the Waterloo Mennonite Church in Kingston.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The experience has been great, meeting and interacting with people from various parts of the world and also being taught by a dynamic lecturer,&#8221; Sinclair said. He took <strong>Lisa Schirch<\/strong>&#8216;s class, &#8220;Digital Peacebuilding and Peace Tech.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There were quite a few valuable things I learnt, but if I should choose one, it would be understanding the power of online communication for either good or evil, and the great task a peacebuilder has to counter online issues such as polarism and extremism,&#8221; he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kratz said that, had SPI not gone online, he would have only been able to sponsor one attendee, given the costs of transportation, lodging and meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team from the Church of England&#8217;s Diocese of Chester also found this an opportunity to learn together.<strong> <\/strong>Seven<strong> <\/strong>priests and administrators attended the &#8220;Trauma, Resilience, and Healing in Times of the Pandemic&#8221; course taught by Al Fuertes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/JennyBridgman-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46534\" width=\"253\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/JennyBridgman-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/JennyBridgman-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/JennyBridgman-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/JennyBridgman-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/07\/JennyBridgman-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><figcaption>Jenny Bridgman, parish priest, in the Diocese of Chester, Church of England.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I want to give the people I minister to and teach the language to be able to talk about what they are living through \u2013 to be able to name this time as &#8216;trauma&#8217; and to use that naming as a starting point,&#8221; said <strong>Jenny Bridgman<\/strong>, a parish priest who also trains men and women for lay ministry. &#8220;Through Al&#8217;s teaching and the group sharing I have learned several approaches that might help me lead people to a place of healing beyond this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bridgman&#8217;s colleague and classmate, <strong>Christine Broad<\/strong>, is rector of the parish of Woodchurch, and dean of women in ministry in the Diocese of Chester. She intends to offer support to her colleagues as they navigate the pandemic&#8217;s effects on their communities, churches, and individual congregants.
