{"id":45634,"date":"2020-04-28T10:07:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T14:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=45634"},"modified":"2022-11-01T13:35:36","modified_gmt":"2022-11-01T17:35:36","slug":"shenandoah-valley-natural-history-classmates-find-solace-discovery-in-solo-fieldtrips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/shenandoah-valley-natural-history-classmates-find-solace-discovery-in-solo-fieldtrips\/","title":{"rendered":"Shenandoah Valley natural history classmates find solace, discovery in solo fieldtrips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cIt\u2019s the highlight of my day to hear students who daily recount the joy they find in now recognizing the animals, plants and rocks around them &#8230; In such unusual times, experiencing the beauty and complexity of the natural world together has been a unique source of hope for us.\u201d <\/p><cite>Professor Doug Graber Neufeld<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>For Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=neufeldd\">Doug Graber Neufeld<\/a><\/strong> and his students in the \u201cNatural History of the Shenandoah Valley\u201d course, there is one small consolation to the loss of a full slate of exciting field trips when courses at Eastern Mennonite University abruptly moved online and students scattered to homes far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spelunking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt least we got that in,\u201d Neufeld said. \u201cThey really loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have never been before and I always love a good challenge,\u201d said <strong>Morgan Pletch.<\/strong> \u201cWhile it was beginner level, I still had a blast!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe caving was sort of out of my comfort zone,\u201d said <strong>Katelyn Dean<\/strong>, \u201cbut I absolutely loved it. (Photo by Isaac Alderfer)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the kind of learning Neufeld loves to hear about. He waits the better part of two years to teach this course. It\u2019s special in part because of the sheer variety of disciplines covered, but also the opportunity to take students out into the field. The shared experiences of birdwatching, caving, hiking, interacting with wildlife, searching for native wildflowers, and conducting fieldwork with biologists create a unique comraderie and strong bonds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pletch got that right away: She had taken Neufeld\u2019s intro to biology class during the fall and jumped at the chance to take another class with him that also included so many field trips. The somewhat rare mix of older and younger students and lots of engaging experiences together meant&nbsp; \u201cconnecting with my peers on a level a student does not typically get in other classes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they weather these times of loss and disruption, Neufeld says his students now experience the course in a different way. \u201dWhile we all keenly feel the disappointment of not being together in person, I think we\u2019ve all come away from this year\u2019s class with a unique understanding of how important nature is to our own mental and physical health.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/MapleFlatsPoolRef-0013-1-2-1024x578.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/MapleFlatsPoolRef-0013-1-2-1024x578.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/MapleFlatsPoolRef-0013-1-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/MapleFlatsPoolRef-0013-1-2-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Maple Flats Ponds,  in the George Washington\/Jefferson National Forest near Stuarts Draft\u00a0.   was on the field trip list for Professor Doug Graber Neufeld&#8217;s local natural history class. (Photo by Isaac Alderfer)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturalist John Muir, whose birthday is coming up the day before Earth Day, once said, \u201cIn every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The field assignments have continued in creative ways. Lab coordinator <strong>Brinton Domangue<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>who manages EMU\u2019s greenhouse, supplied videos of a botany walk through the Bennett\u2019s Run area in Bergton and the James Madison University Edith J. Carrier Arboretum. She scrambled for a photo and shared it later (right).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A salamander hunt, a documentation exercise in a local woodland park of their choice, a birding expedition timed for spring migration &#8212; these journeys provide gifts of solitude and discovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, <strong>Chelsea Brubaker <\/strong>says the class has given her a good reason to get outside and away from the computer she sits in front of \u201cfor hours at a time.\u201d She has learned to identify more plants and tests her skills on a nearby rail trail, or at two favorite destinations further away: Chickie\u2019s Rock County Park and the Clarence Shrock Park at Governor Dick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pletch says her go-to spot is Crockett Park near Warrenton in Fauquier County. In her first year of college studies as a biology major, the breadth of the class has broadened her horizons beyond established interests in human anatomy and physiology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am so glad that I decided to take this class,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has opened up interests that I didn&#8217;t even know I had.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/WSSlimySalBergton-6783-1024x627.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/WSSlimySalBergton-6783-1024x627.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/WSSlimySalBergton-6783-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/WSSlimySalBergton-6783-768x470.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>A northern slimy salamander in Bergton. (Photo by Isaac Alderfer)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s thought about many possibilities for the future, from \u201cteaching at the secondary level to becoming a physician or even continuing research at a higher level institution.\u201d Figuring out \u201cwhat I\u2019m being called to do\u201d is still part of her time at EMU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery in one\u2019s backyard has also been a theme with Dean, a biology major from nearby Broadway. For the past five years, she and her dad spend time in the woods foraging for wild edibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/04\/image2-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45675\" width=\"268\" height=\"357\"\/><figcaption><strong>A morel mushroom. (Photo by Katelyn Dean)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It started with learning more about ramps, she said. \u201cI was so intrigued with the fact that there are all of these edible mushrooms and plants out in the woods around us that people don\u2019t really know about or pay attention to. And so, I researched information about where to look and what time they grow. I even listened to podcasts about people from other states finding them in their area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dean shared in a recent class meeting the natural clues she uses to find morels, including looking for certain kinds of trees and waiting for signs like blooming wild violets and the height of mayapples. On a recent excursion, she was pleased to recognize even more species &#8212; wintergreen, hemlock and liverleaf flowers &#8212; that she had learned from class. And she and her dad spotted an American woodcock, a rare find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neufeld treasures hearing about these finds and says he\u2019s already excited to teach the course again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the highlight of my day to hear students who daily recount the joy they find in now recognizing the animals, plants and rocks around them,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m sure we\u2019ll be sending each other pictures and accounts of our nature sightings well after the end of the semester.
