They look uncomfortable \u2013 an apparent stranger has been talking to them for about 10 minutes, slowly getting physically closer all the while. What do you do? Should you do anything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> One EMU student who recently witnessed this scenario went up to the women, asked if they had met before, and chatted with them briefly until the stranger left. The two women expressed gratitude for this simple intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdl78y20Xp25tO9Z8r0rL5HxM7cCuoNSHkVRW2rY6I23WjSTg\/viewform\">Students, register here!<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p> That\u2019s the type of action taught in <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/safer-together\/green-dot\">\u201cGreen Dot\u201d proactive bystander trainings<\/a> \u2013 ways that anyone can help de-escalate or prevent situations of power-based personal violence. The trainings are tailored so that attendees can come up with a solution that\u2019s within their comfort zones, such as starting a conversation with those two at the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The next Green Dot trainings for students are <strong>Tues., Feb. 25<\/strong> from 6-10 p.m. in the library\u2019s JAMAR classroom and <strong>Sun., April 5<\/strong> from 1-5 p.m. in University Commons 211\/212. They\u2019re led by <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=lzw2295\">Leda Werner<\/a>, grant coordinator for student life; <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=jds558\">Jon Swartz<\/a>, director of student accountability and restorative justice; and <strong>Jess Balac <\/strong>of the Collins Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cOftentimes we see situations where we know we should step in, but we&#8217;re not sure how or what to do,\u201d Werner said. \u201cGreen Dot gives folks tangible skills and tools to intervene in those instances and make a real difference for someone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tThis semester marks the full rollout of the trainings, which were first held last semester at EMU for community advisors and pastoral assistants. Werner said they hope to expand the training to incoming students this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tStudent Gabby McMillon said the training added to her \u201ctoolbox of skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cI found the intervention framework to be very useful and accessible, and soon found myself practicing things I learned from the training,\u201d McMillon said.<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Say you\u2019re at a restaurant when you notice two women sitting at the bar.
