Her group spent a week with <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/\">Frontera de Cristo<\/a>, a Presbyterian, \u201cbinational border ministry\u201d that works in the neighboring cities of Agua Prieta, Mexico and Douglas, Arizona.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cThey made an issue that had seemed very black and white have a lot of nuance, basically drawing out the humanity in the border story and the people who decide to cross, and also the people who decide to police it,\u201d Nisly said. She felt then, \u201cI need more of this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tNisly went on to intern last summer with Frontera de Cristo: working on the website and newsletter, teaching English, and creating programming for children whose families were waiting for their asylum case to be heard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This semester, she is an intern with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholiccharitiesusa.org\/our-ministry\/immigration-refugee-services\/\">Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services<\/a> while at EMU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/wcsc\/\">Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/a> (WCSC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cIt&#8217;s exciting to be in a place where everybody really believes in the work they are doing,\u201d Nisly said.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interns and immigration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> She\u2019s not the only student at WCSC this semester gaining professional experience in the immigration field. <strong>James Dunmore<\/strong>, a liberal arts major, is working with <a href=\"https:\/\/faithinaction.org\/issue-campaign\/la-red\/\">LA RED<\/a>, a platform of Faith in Action. He\u2019s travelled for trainings twice: In late January, to New Mexico to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.krwg.org\/post\/faith-leaders-local-activists-protest-ice-detention-center-chaparral?fbclid=IwAR3WuQkowtBOAmTbrbht-Hm49B5RVdTJe_Ps6sewWHOgc1hkgQi9n_-D0pQ\">participate in demonstrations with faith leaders and activists at a processing center<\/a> and in mid-February, to Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tIn Washington D.C for 40 years, the WCSC program has cultivated strong connections with nonprofits serving the Latinx population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWe have students interacting with Latin American immigrants every semester within a variety of fields,\u201d said WCSC co-director <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=kds273\">Kimberly Schmidt<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cLast semester, an accounting major worked at Latin American Youth Center, a nursing major was at La Clinica del Pueblo, and social work majors were with Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services and Ayuda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tNisly spends her days in D.C. translating legal documents, researching cases, and interpreting for clients. She works alongside a volunteer attorney and a law student, lending her Spanish skills to their \u201clegalese.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cIt&#8217;s a good outlet for the general anxiety I feel about our immigration system,\u201d said Nisly. \u201cYes, it is still a scary and terrible system, but at least I helped a client communicate with their lawyer today, or at least I translated a document to help with a case. At least I&#8217;m learning about what it takes to help people navigate this system.\u201d<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Summer in the borderlands<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> Nisly saw firsthand last summer how difficult it is for migrants to navigate the immigration system. Her time with Frontera de Cristo, looking after the children at the U.S.-Mexico border, was by turns a joyful and sorrowful experience. She has stacks of drawings that the children made for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cThey are bursting with energy and creativity,\u201d Nisly wrote in a newsletter article for the organization. \u201cThey have dreams: one wants to be a teacher, another a doctor. One little girl drew a picture of the school she will teach in one day. It\u2019s surrounded by flowers and apple trees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tOther classes were taken over by the shadows that haunted the childrens\u2019 families. Nisly remembered one boy saying that he was frightened, because there were men who wanted to kill his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cThat\u2019s a lot of weight for a six-year-old,\u201d Nisly said. \u201cAnd then the other kids started sharing stories of trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The asylum seekers generally waited at the border for about seven weeks to enter the United States. After entering, their asylum cases can take up to multiple years to be resolved.
