{"id":44798,"date":"2020-02-07T07:28:41","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T12:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=44798"},"modified":"2020-02-14T17:06:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T22:06:15","slug":"building-bridges-of-understanding-emus-center-for-interfaith-engagement-celebrates-10th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/building-bridges-of-understanding-emus-center-for-interfaith-engagement-celebrates-10th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Building bridges of understanding, EMU\u2019s Center for Interfaith Engagement celebrates 10th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rabbi Dr. Niles Goldstein<\/strong>, asked to reflect on the impact of Eastern Mennonite University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/interfaith\/\">Center for Interfaith Engagement<\/a> on its 10th anniversary, called the organization \u201ca counterweight to today\u2019s climate of tribalizm and demonization of the other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its work is \u201cvital to mutual understanding, breaking down stereotypes, and building bridges between and among religious and spiritual communities,\u201d said the former Jewish Visiting Scholar, who spent 2013 teaching and facilitating conversations at EMU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/interfaith\/timeline\">View a timeline of CIE impact.<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2010, CIE has worked to build interreligious and intercultural understanding, knowledge and friendship. Its impacts stretch from campus  \u2013  with undergraduate and graduate courses taught by visiting scholars and the implementation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/bible\/minors\">new interfaith minor<\/a>, among many other activities  \u2013 to the Shenandoah Valley community to other regions of the United States and countries of the Middle East.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The anniversary year is a time of reflection on past accomplishments and gratitude for \u201cthose who made this all possible,\u201d Director <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=tzs2828\">Tim Seidel<\/a><\/strong> noted, as well as a time to look ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170810-IPC-visits-Islamic-Center-006-1000px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34583\" width=\"375\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170810-IPC-visits-Islamic-Center-006-1000px.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170810-IPC-visits-Islamic-Center-006-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170810-IPC-visits-Islamic-Center-006-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption>A visit to the Islamic Center of the Shenandoah Valley.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are particularly excited to continue to provide opportunities for EMU students to interact with people of different faiths and to develop an understanding of the importance of interfaith engagement itself,\u201d Seidel said. \u201cDeveloping the skills and sensibilities to relate across faith difference is critical to any vocation and career they may pursue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spring events<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CIE\u2019s anniversary events this spring and summer include a <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2020\/center-for-interfaith-engagement-to-host-spring-film-series\/\">film series<\/a>, a University Colloquium March 18-19 with scholar Saher Selod, student-focused sessions on interfaith understanding, and the June 2020 interfaith peace camp for children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A campus research project partially sponsored by the Interfaith Youth Core is also in progress this spring, with focus groups among EMU\u2019s growing religiously diverse student body, and a goal of informing future programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/01\/20200120-mlk-photo-essay-12-3000px--1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44651\" width=\"362\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/01\/20200120-mlk-photo-essay-12-3000px--1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/01\/20200120-mlk-photo-essay-12-3000px--300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/01\/20200120-mlk-photo-essay-12-3000px--768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><figcaption>CIE contributes programming in conjunction with campus events, such as the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This past fall, staff consulted on programming and attended an interfaith event in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fall events also included an anniversary reception and an October University Colloquium with <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/muslim-scholar-and-cultural-critic-talks-history-theology-film-and-more-during-multi-day-visit\/\">Amir Hussain<\/a>,  a professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University in California. (EMU file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Brave and innovative\u2019: tributes from the former director and scholars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The tributes from those involved over the 10 years of its existence are moving testament to the organization\u2019s far-reaching impact and its important work today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ed Martin,<\/strong> who directed the center for its first six years, says \u201c<em>EMU was both brave and innovative in creating CIE.&nbsp; In our pluralistic society that includes persons of different faiths, it is important that graduates of EMU know something about other religions and are comfortable interacting with people of different faith traditions. Today they will meet them in a variety of contexts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/interfaith\/personnel\">Trina Trotter Nussbaum<\/a><\/strong>, associate director: <em>When I have the chance to talk to staff and faculty at universities who are interested in doing interfaith work on their campuses, I am often met with several responses. One response is disbelief that a Christian university would have the courage and the foresight to develop and host a center devoted to interfaith engagement when many Christians in the U.S. have a lot of fear about the religious other. Many staff working in both secular and religious universities have expressed their wish to have a center at their university like we do at EMU. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I continue to be grateful to those who saw this need ten years ago, developed the possibility for a Center for Interfaith Engagement at EMU and worked to bring it to life. I am excited for what the next ten years will bring. We need holistic and restorative interfaith engagement now more than ever.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>Rabbi Dr. Niles Goldstein<\/strong>, visiting Jewish scholar in 2013: <em>Working with my colleagues from other faith traditions was an enriching and inspiring experience, and I particularly enjoyed learning more about the Mennonite tradition and the spirit of ecumenical openness that made CIE possible. As a counterweight to today&#8217;s climate of tribalism and demonization of the other, the work of CIE is vital to mutual understanding, breaking down stereotypes, and building bridges between and among religious and spiritual communities.
