The 16 students who released them gathered to honor those who had donated their bodies to science, providing their anatomy lab with cadavers to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/alumni-dissecting-cadavers-at-emu-is-an-invaluable-and-powerful-experience\/\">EMU alumni currently in medical school talk about the experience of cadaver dissection.<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost likely, tonight, there are people out there missing them,\u201d Professor <strong>Julia Halterman <\/strong>said, opening the memorial. But this service was very different from a funeral, she explained, as&nbsp;\u201cwe celebrate how we have learned from them in their death.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They only know the cadavers\u2019 first names: Anna, Jeane, Richard, and Earl. Yet several students referred to them as their \u201csilent teachers.\u201d They made surprising discoveries, in some cases \u2013 one of the men had three lobes in his left lung, making him one of just 3 percent of people with the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/12\/Cadavers-Memorial-10-1000px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44271\" width=\"404\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/12\/Cadavers-Memorial-10-1000px.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/12\/Cadavers-Memorial-10-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/12\/Cadavers-Memorial-10-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><figcaption>Caroline Lehman and Jonathan Nielsen, both students in the anatomy lab, play &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221; during a memorial service for the cadaver donors.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/alumni-dissecting-cadavers-at-emu-is-an-invaluable-and-powerful-experience\/\">Students shared reflections on and gratitude for the dissection experience.<\/a> Then they sang \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d along with classmates <strong>Caroline Lehman <\/strong>on violin and <strong>Jonathan Nielsen<\/strong> on baritone saxophone, before trekking out into the cold to release the lanterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHer sacrifice allowed me to learn and grow,\u201d one student reflected. \u201cI pray that you all rest peacefully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn so many classes, we just learn the theoretical concepts,\u201d another said. A teaching assistant for the anatomy classes, she is also a leader of EMU\u2019s Pre-Students of Osteopathic Medicine Club, which hosted a suture clinic immediately prior to the service. In one of their last interactions with the cadavers this semester, students practiced suturing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHonoring our donors for the first time was a special experience,\u201d Ravenna said. \u201cI hope this is a tribute that continues long after I graduate. Having students tell me they now feel closure truly touched me.
