Twelve students from Eastern Mennonite, Bethel College and Bluffton University are gaining professional, community and cultural experiences in EMU\u2019s Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/a> (WCSC) this semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program, in Washington D.C. since 1976, provides students with professional internships in fields from youth work to immigration services to health care. It is also a \u201ccommunity-building endeavor,\u201d with students living together in the Nelson Good House in the Brookland neighborhood of Northeast Washington D.C. They explore Washington\u2019s cultural and historic attractions, and learn about urban issues such as gentrification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWCSC has long-term connections and a history of successful placements with many area organizations,\u201d said co-director Kimberly Schmidt<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cWe are one of the few liberal arts universities with dedicated buildings and a local staff, which shows a real commitment to offering this kind of resume-building and urban cultural experience to students in all academic programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WCSC also has cooperative agreements with Mennonite-affiliated \u201csister schools\u201d and welcomes applications from Goshen College and Fresno Pacific University students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
