The Reverend Barbara Harrison Seward <\/strong>has accepted a call to become priest-in-charge at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Harrisonburg, Va. She is a 2011 graduate of Eastern Mennonite Seminary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cFrom the days of old, I strongly believe that God planted the story of me within the soil of Harrisonburg,\u201d Seward said. \u201cTherefore, I\u2019m coming home to the place where I encountered the living God. This community, including Eastern Mennonite Seminary has given me so much, and I hope to correspond in kind. My greatest hope for myself and for Emmanuel is that we will actively plant, as well as actively water the seeds of hope, justice, transformation and restoration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seward was selected during a\nnine-month process by a committee of seven lay parish members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cCommittee members were impressed not only\nwith Mother Seward\u2019s theological seriousness and spiritual depth, but also her\nconcern for, and commitment to, pastoral care of her flock, and to promoting\ncommunity outreach and social justice,\u201d said Dee Childs, the church\u2019s senior\nwarden. \u201cWe believe Mother Seward has the spiritual gifts needed to serve as an\neffective priest-in-charge\u2014helping our parishioners discern the ministries to\nwhich they themselves are called, and facilitating their growth in these\nministries.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seward will preach and celebrate Holy\nCommunion for the first time at Emmanuel on Aug. 11. A formal installation is\ntentatively planned for September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She succeeds The Reverend Daniel D.\nRobayo Hidalgo, who was appointed last year as missioner for Latino and\nHispanic ministries in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. He had served\nat Emmanuel since 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seward first connected with Emmanuel Episcopal\nChurch while a student at Eastern Mennonite Seminary from 2007 to 2011. She led\nand coordinated a speaker series on the topic of poverty for one of the\nchurch\u2019s adult-education offerings. During this same period, she was also\ninvolved in ministries at Harrisonburg Baptist Church and Waynesboro United\nMethodist Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2012, Robayo and the church sponsored\nher when she enrolled at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria to\ncomplete her formation as an Episcopal priest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this summer, Seward completed\na two-year term as rector of the Episcopal Church of Saint Benedict in\nBolingbrook, Illinois. Previously she served for two years as priest-in-charge\nof Saint Bride\u2019s Episcopal Church in Oregon, Ilinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seward’s initial curacy following her\nordination to the priesthood in 2013 was as a parochial assistant at Trinity\nEpiscopal Church in Excelsior, Minnesota, near Minneapolis-Saint Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her journey to the priesthood began\nin Harrisonburg more than 12 years ago, when she was still employed teaching\nmarketing and business courses in the city\u2019s public schools. She received\npost-secondary education in marketing and communications at Fayetteville State\nUniversity (North Carolina) and at Johns Hopkins University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
