While the <\/span>27th annual Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival<\/span><\/a> (SVBF) at Eastern Mennonite University attracted professional musicians from all over the country, its 10 days of rehearsals and performances also provided something else: \u201cA great learning experience\u201d for the seven students who participated as interns and performing fellows, said executive director and violinist <\/span>David McCormick<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival, which takes place under the artistic direction of Professor Emeritus <\/span>Kenneth J. Nafziger<\/b><\/a>, is devoted to promoting an appreciation for and understanding of the music of Bach and a featured composer, country, era or people. This year it explored the theme of creation and featured Franz Joseph Haydn\u2019s \u201cThe Creation\u201d and Darius Milhaud\u2019s \u201cLa cr\u00e9ation du monde.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Summer interns <\/span>Kaleb Branner<\/b>, <\/span>Leah Wenger<\/b>, <\/span>Evelina Kilimnik<\/b>, <\/span>Ada Zhang<\/b>, and <\/span>Rachel Helm<\/b> monitored rehearsal locations, sold merchandise and served as stage crew and orchestra librarians, making them \u201cinvaluable,\u201d McCormick said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the interns weren\u2019t just helping McCormick; they were also gaining a valuable inside look at the music business \u2013 \u201cand from experience I can tell you that it\u2019s just not possible to have a music career anymore without knowing your way around some business things,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many concert goers may not be aware of \u201call the work\u201d a festival requires, said Wenger, a senior psychology and music performance double major who along with fellow EMU student Branner also served as an SVBF intern during the spring semester. Theirs is a better informed perspective, though, having completed tasks that included \u201cgetting word out that this event is happening, and fundraising, and board meetings, and hiring musicians, and getting things printed and into folders and sent out to people,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Facilitating rehearsals, though, also meant they were being exposed to great music: \u201cThey got to hear the orchestra and world-class musicians every day for ten days,\u201d McCormick said. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty incredible for them to have that opportunity to hear chamber music and orchestral music all day long \u2013 as part of their jobs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Five students \u2013 interns <\/span>Kilimnik<\/b>, <\/span>Zhang<\/b> and <\/span>Helm<\/b>, plus high school students <\/span>John Wu<\/b> and <\/span>James Kim<\/b> \u2013 participated as fellows, performing in the second festival concert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rehearsing alongside professional musicians for that concert was a decidedly unique opportunity, said Zhang, a third-time fellow and 2019 graduate of Eastern Mennonite High School.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn a student orchestra, you have so many rehearsals, like every single week, but this shows us how a professional orchestra rehearses,\u201d she said: \u201cEverybody knows their music <\/span>before<\/span><\/i> they get to rehearsal. It\u2019s very, very efficient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven from the very first rehearsal, you come in, you sit down, you open your music and you already have what you\u2019re hearing on the soundtrack,\u201d said violinist Kilimnik, an EMU sophomore and second-time fellow. \u201cYou\u2019re already playing it. There is no in-between. Instead of the growth of music, it\u2019s just a sudden happening of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And there\u2019s more than just notation to absorb in the few rehearsals, she said, lessons that can be learned only on stage: \u201cYou\u2019re watching your instrument, your music, and the people in front of you at the same time, just everything at once. You\u2019re watching their fingers, you\u2019re watching their bow, you\u2019re watching their cues, you\u2019re watching the conductor, so it\u2019s just everything. Just look for everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019re listening to everybody else at the same time,\u201d added Helm, a rising senior at the Shenandoah Valley Academy and first-time fellow. \u201cIt\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
