{"id":42445,"date":"2019-06-13T14:39:38","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T18:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=42445"},"modified":"2020-08-25T13:49:04","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T17:49:04","slug":"summer-2019-cross-culturals-mexico-puerto-rico-washington-d-c-and-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/summer-2019-cross-culturals-mexico-puerto-rico-washington-d-c-and-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer 2019 cross-culturals: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C. and South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eastern Mennonite University students studying on cross-culturals this summer traveled to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C. and South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cross-cultural study, which students have called an integral and \u201clife-changing\u201d component of EMU\u2019s core curriculum for more than 30 years, has taken students to more than 80 domestic and global locations such as the Middle East, Lithuania, Central America and China. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether with a full semester abroad or as part of a summer or alternative program, students fulfilling their cross-cultural requirements establish the foundations they need for living, serving and leading in a global context.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Summer cross-culturals<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42446\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42446 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/South-Africa-CC-Feat-Image-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/South-Africa-CC-Feat-Image-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/South-Africa-CC-Feat-Image-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/South-Africa-CC-Feat-Image.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students traveling in South Africa are learning about the nation&#8217;s legacy of colonialism and apartheid, and its attempts to overcome that past.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we\u2019ve experienced, which has provoked much thought and emotion, are the many ways in which one history can be told,\u201d the South Africa group wrote in the \u201cUnderstanding the Boer Narrative\u201d entry on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cross-cultural blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That trip is focused on the nation\u2019s legacy of colonialism and apartheid, and its attempts to overcome that past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/puerto-rico-summer-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puerto Rico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students observed the \u201cawe-inspiring\u201d perseverance of people still suffering the effects of Hurricane Maria, wrote <strong>Emily Lam<\/strong>. The group, led by Professor <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=jlh2257\">Jenni Holsinger<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <strong>Adam Yoder<\/strong>, also learned about the island\u2019s history, participated in service, and visited Aibonito, San Juan and El Yunque.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42447\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42447 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/Puerto-Rico-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/Puerto-Rico-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/Puerto-Rico-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/06\/Puerto-Rico.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Puerto Rico, students\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learned about the island\u2019s history, participated in service, and visited Aibonito, San Juan and El Yunque.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/mexico-summer-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/lb976\">Linda<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=bb329\">Brian Martin Burkholder<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, learned about cultures in different regions of the country, and visiting Mexico City, Teotihuacan and the Costa Esmeralda of Veracruz. They also visited a church youth group in Ecatepec, near Mexico City. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite the language barrier we all got along great,\u201d wrote <strong>Emma Picht<\/strong>. \u201cSome of us made bets over hot salsa, and we played word games to practice our Spanish and their English. \u2026 Jessica, one of the girls from the youth group, and I connected over music and singing, despite my limited vocabulary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/\">Read cross-cultural blog posts.<\/a><\/aside><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Washington D.C., students in EMU\u2019s cross-cultural urban studies, internship, and community living experience at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/wcsc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are gaining professional experiences through internships. They also learn about urban cultures, history and life through various tours and a course titled \u201cBlues &amp; Dreams: A Multicultural History of Washington D.C.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2019-20<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upcoming cross-culturals in the 2019-20 academic year will take students to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/europe-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vienna and Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/wcsc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/central-america-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guatemala and Columbia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning August 1, <\/span><b>Beth Good \u201903<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be EMU\u2019s director of Intercultural Programs. Currently the Kenya Country Representative for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), she has also lived and worked in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her other roles have included MCC\u2019s global health coordinator, the director of clinical services of Hope within Community Health Center, the HIV program coordinator for Eastern Mennonite Missions, and instructor for EMU\u2019s RN-BSN program.
