(Photo courtesy of Tara Kishbaugh)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mankamyer and Schunn were among the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/first-class-of-national-science-foundation-funded-stem-scholars-begins-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first cohort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a National Science Foundation-funded scholarship program called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/financial-aid\/departmental-scholarships\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STEM Scholars Engaging in Local Problems, or SSELP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The innovative program, created by EMU professors, fosters real-world impact through socially engaged learning. Students are provided with peer and faculty mentorship, funds for conference participation and participation in problem-solving a local issue during their second year of studies. .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/first-class-of-national-science-foundation-funded-stem-scholars-begins-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more about the first SSELP Scholars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The $600,000 grant funds seven more students for a second cohort starting in fall 2019, as well as support services, including the strong peer-tutoring program, \u00a0and activities for students both years. The scholarships may be renewed for up to four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The required multidisciplinary STEM 219 course \u2014 co-taught by <\/span><b>Professor Tara Kishbaugh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chair of the chemistry and biology departments, and <\/span><b>Professor Danny King<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of the engineering program \u2014 focuses on career exploration and skill-building. Readings came from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/common-read-to-explore-vocation-in-storycorps-callings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU\u2019s Common Read<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by StoryCorps founder Dave Isay with Maya Millett (Penguin, 2017<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students attended <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/spring-2019-suter-science-seminars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suter Science Seminars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented by a geographer and environmental scientist, and visited local sites to converse with professionals in a variety of fields including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Jon Roller<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-founder of the Charlottesville-based engineering consulting firm EcoSystems Services, who provided a tour of the stream restoration project in Broadway;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Myrl Sauder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and son <\/span><b>Dan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who own Sauder Woodworking Company, a third-generation family-owned business based in Archbold, Ohio;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Daryl Myers \u201884<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head of product development and implementation teams at the data management company VistaShare;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Travis Riesen \u201814<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Afton Scientific, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pharmaceutical manufacturing company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Megen Dalton,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the Shenandoah Soil and Water Conservation District.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For their final projects, students interviewed alumni who had either graduated within their degree program or were working in the potential field of interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jake Myers<\/strong>, who is interested in sustainable agriculture, talked to <\/span><b>Trevor Weiner \u201809<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a watershed specialist with the Midland County Conservation District, about faith, creation care, stewardship and ethics. Weiner also talked about how his definition of success has evolved over the years in the workforce. \u201cTo me, success is if projects are completed or all parties are pleased,\u201d he told Myers. \u201cI want to enjoy my work, but also make a difference and the best way to do that is through establishing relationships with people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alumni addressed a range of questions, from what was particularly valuable about their EMU education and cross-cultural experience to their post-graduate paths to graduate school and\/or current employment.
