Miller<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Outstanding First-Year Chemistry Student Award<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Jonah C. Short-Miller<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Outstanding Senior Chemistry Student Award<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Maya K. Dula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Addison K. Mongold<\/strong>: <\/span>Award for Exceptional Service (biology)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, winners of the STEM Poster Celebration were recognized. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/2019-ace-festival-poster-session-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See coverage here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Business and Leadership<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Erik Peachey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned the Most Outstanding Accounting Student Award for his attention to detail, precision, application of his learnings in internships, and his contributions as financial manager of Common Grounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Austin Sachs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned the Most Outstanding Economics Student Award for his academic performance and ability to apply economic and business principles, especially in debate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Andrea Cable <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earned the Most Outstanding Business Administration Student Award, for her work in the classroom and also her successful operation of her photography business.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Jourdyn Friend <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was recognized with the department\u2019s Exceptional Service Award for her work-study contributions in the department and as a representative to the marketing and communications department, as well as for her contributions as a student-athlete, with Black Student Union and Destiny\u2019s Daughters. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Michael Wilhite<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned the Exceptional Leadership Award<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for his contributions in academics and athletics.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Austin Tomlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned the Outstanding Achievement Award for academic success and for aiding in the success of other students as a tutor. He was also a student-athlete and SGA senator. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Daniel Yu<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned the<\/span><\/b> Exceptional Research Award for his work in <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everal research projects and a presentation at a prominent national conference.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Logann Braun<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was recognized with the <\/span>Outstanding Recreation Leadership and Sports Studies Award<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for her contributions to academics and athletics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em><b>Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic Programs Director Jayne Docherty recognized the following students for their contributions to the CJP and wider EMU community.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Tala<\/b><b> Bautista<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published an article in <em>The Mennonite<\/em> magazine; continually challenges CJP and the university to center indigenous voices; offered excellent collaboration in organizing Spring Lobby Weekend; and engages students in local practice with organizations such as Virginia Organizing and Vine and Fig.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Yasmiene Mabrouk<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designed and co-facilitated &#8220;Dismantling Colonial Mindsets: The Doctrine of Discovery and Its Ongoing Impact&#8221; for Indigenous People&#8217;s Day; facilitated a zine making workshop during the arts and peacebuilding event for the Harrisonburg High School Peer Leaders group; served on the Mediation and Support Team for the Anabaptist Leadership Retreat; and co-led the spring 2019 RJ training and facilitated conversations with RELI.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Julian Ward<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> facilitated a four-part dialogue circle on masculinity with undergraduates; co-led the spring 2019 RJ Training; facilitated a circle on leadership with students from JMU; and volunteers weekly at Black&#8217;s Run Forest Farm with CJP alum Jonathan McRay.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em><b>Education<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><b>Mariah King, Sarah Kline, Sarah Beth Ranck<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Rachel Shenk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Andry Stutzman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were selected to participate in the 2019 Teachers of Promise Institute. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/emu-names-five-as-teachers-of-promise-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Jess Washington<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was selected by department faculty for the 2019 Courage to Teach Award, modeled after principles in Parker Palmer\u2019s book of the same name. Department faculty selected Jess for her dedication and success in teaching, her genuine caring for students, reflective practice, highly principled behaviors, and her courage to navigate challenging experiences.\u00a0 She was presented with a\u00a0copy of Palmer\u2019s book.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><b>History<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mario Hernandez is the <\/span><b>Outstanding Senior History Student,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0recognized for his contributions to the department over three years as work-study assistant, for his academic excellence as a distinguished student in each political science and history course taken, and for excellence in scholarly achievement, especially with a paper about the Artherdale experimental community and a project on 19th century novels presented at the Mid Atlantic American Studies Conference in fall 2019. Mario was presented with a very weighty copy of the <em>Martyr&#8217;s Mirror.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Mathematics<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Cameron Byer, Daniel Harder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Hannah Leaman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> placed second out of 62 teams and earned Master Codebreaker status in the Kryptos 2019 cryptanalysis competition. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/cryptanalysis-trio-finishes-second-in-international-competition-achieves-master-codebreaker-status\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Cameron Byer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also won the department\u2019s math competition and a \u201cmath geek\u201d t-shirt. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em><b>Music<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four students were recognized for musical excellence by department chair Professor James Richardson:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Isaac Longacre,<\/strong>\u00a0a music education major,\u00a0played Gaston in the spring production of \u201cBeauty and the Beast,\u201d and has performed as a baritone vocalist in several ensembles. He also plays horn and has volunteered at music outreach events.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Kaleb Branner<\/strong> has excelled in composition and conducting, has served as assistant conductor of Emulate and University Choir, and also as an assistant music director for \u201cBeauty and the Beast.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robert Chaplin<\/strong>, a music education major and clarinetist,\u00a0won the concerto competition, was a featured soloist in the spring orchestra competition, volunteered at several outreach events, \u00a0presented a poster at the ACE Festival, and has been a music theory and history tutor. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Evelina Kilimnik<\/strong>, a violinist, has worked in the music department office and been a stage manager, overseeing the logistics of musicmaking at EMU. She has played in the orchestra for &#8220;Beauty and the Beast&#8221; and has performed in multiple Masterclasses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em><b>Nursing<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><b>Abby Byler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the recipient of the Sacred Covenant Award for the student who exemplifies<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/nursing\/covenant\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU\u2019s unique approach to nursing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that recognizes the nurse\/client relationship as holy ground. <\/span><b>Audrey Martin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earned the Academic Achievement Award. <\/span><b>Danielle Davidson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was recognized with the Servant Leader Award, for a student who has shown a deep level of caring and is an example to the entire nursing department of service and leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><b>Psychology<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Mariah Denlinger <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Yelisey Shapovalov<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were both winners of the Galen R. Lehman Outstanding Achievement in Research Award for exceptional initiative and creativity. Both research projects \u2013 on the pedestal effect and faculty-student similarities effect on learning outcomes in the classroom, respectively \u2013 were accepted in the Virginia Association for Psychological Science annual conference.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Emma Stutzman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Mariah Denlinger <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were co-recipients of the Psychology Internship Award, renamed this year in honor of retiring professor Judy H. Mullet.\u00a0 Stutzman was with Church World Service and Denlinger with the Community Service Board; both faced unique challenges and were recognized by their supervisors as looking to expand their experience beyond expectations, said Professor Ryan Thompson. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em><b>Sociology<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ariel Barbosa<\/strong> is this year\u2019s initiate, with a lifetime membership, into Alpha Kappa Delta International Honor Society in Sociology, a honor society that brings together people interested in developing scientific knowledge to solve social problems. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Campus Life<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41976\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/emus-2019-achievement-and-leadership-excellence-awardees-honored-at-spring-chapel\/_5d_5747-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41976\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41976 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/04\/5D_5747-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/04\/5D_5747-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/04\/5D_5747-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/04\/5D_5747-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Marleyna Contreras, Cameron White and Rebekah Hoskins, all seniors serving Campus Activities Council, are recognized by Tyler Goss.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b><em>Campus Activities Council<\/em> <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<strong> Cameron White, Rebekah Hoskins<\/strong> and <strong>Marleyna Contreras<\/strong> each earned an Outstanding Service Award. \u00a0Tyler Goss thanked White for her three years of excellent leadership and guidance, adding that CAC will be a very different organization without her presence.\u00a0Hoskins has been a part of CAC for 2.5 years. \u201cYou lead others with compassion and understanding and you have a knack for coming up with great event ideas,\u201d Goss said. He thanked C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ontreras for her can-do attitude when she joined CAC this spring semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><b>Campus Ministries<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><b>Lydia Haggard, Victoria Barnes, Yonas Ketsula <\/b>and<b> Marina Baker <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were recognized by Campus Pastor Brian Martin Burkholder for their service to campus ministry in a variety of roles, including planning and leading worship and spiritual renewal events, meeting individual students for discipleship and facilitating gatherings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><b>Common Grounds<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Grounds, the campus coffee house, is managed by a senior team of four \u201cexceptional students with creative energy and passion for their work,\u201d said Carissa Luginbill, a residence director who works with the coffeehouse management team. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Shelby Alto <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been the business\u2019s product manager for three semesters, and shown special care in listening to barista and customer concerns. She has implemented the monthly Smiley\u2019s Ice Cream Flavor of the Month offering, and also \u201cordered just about every kind of milk you can imagine, oat milk, almond milk, and the list goes on,\u201d Luginbill said.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Grace Burkhart<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marketing\/events manager, organized a range of events from Black Student Union events to chapel talkbacks, concerts, TGIW events, art exhibits and movie nights. \u201cEverything has been done with care and creativity in a timely and organized fashion,\u201d Luginbill said.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lydia Chappell Deckert<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, operations manager, is the HR specialist, charged with interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluations of 25 staff. She was praised for creating a stronger and more cohesive management team.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Erik Peachey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, financial manager, handles overall finances and budgets \u201cwith professionalism and care.\u201d He has implemented a new point of sales of system and plastic reusable gift cards. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em><b>Destiny\u2019s Daughters<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melody Pannell recognized the following members of the inaugural executive team of Destiny\u2019s Daughters: <strong>Precious Waddy<\/strong>, president; <strong>Tajah Miller,<\/strong> vice president; <strong>Jess Washington<\/strong>, secretary; <strong>Jourdyn Friend<\/strong>, treasurer; and\u00a0<strong>Val Hernandez Bustillo<\/strong>, chaplain.
