(Photo by Jon Styer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jones, too, had familiar listeners. \u201cI\u2019m a Community Assistant, so some of my hall came out to watch,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not hard to talk about something you\u2019re passionate about.\u201d The senior, who will graduate May 5, hopes to work with juvenile offenders and shared about the experience of lobbying lawmakers against solitary confinement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Showcase<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its second year, the spring semester festival has blossomed into a university-wide showcase of STEM and humanities research and arts performances and exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clemson wildlife conservation professor <\/span><b>Drew Lanham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/conservationist-bird-lover-and-wildlife-ecology-professor-drew-lanham-to-kick-off-second-annual-ace-festival\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keynote address <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Wednesday evening, highlighting the event\u2019s interdisciplinary focus through his own thematic attention as a writer and poet to issues of conservation and social justice. (<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/2019\/04\/18\/ace-festival-keynote-drew-lanham\/\">Listen here.<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The following events ranged from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/salticids-hoist-the-2019-quiz-bowl-trophy-um-ok-t-shirts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quirky and fun STEM Games Quiz Bowl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a senior art show and a concert. Approximately 80 students were selected by a committee to give oral presentations in themed sessions moderated by faculty members. More than 100 students participated in poster sessions describing research and projects across all disciplines. Exhibits and performances involved 90 students. [<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/2019-ace-festival-poster-session-awards\/\">See poster session winners<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day also featured a pre-premiere of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/student-produced-mj-sharp-documentary-to-premiere-april-16-at-emu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a documentary about slain UN armed group expert <\/span><b>M.J. Sharp \u201805<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, produced over nearly two years by seven students who began the project in a documentary video production class taught by Professor Jerry Holsopple and continued their commitment\u00a0 after the course ended. His father <\/span><b>John Sharp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attended the screening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Research foci show student engagement<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many students chose to focus their research on aspects of their curriculum or campus infrastructure, noted Provost <\/span><b>Fred Kniss<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis high level of interest and attention says to me that EMU is a community where students know they are valued and their work can make an impact,\u201d he said. \u201cOur faculty, too, are helping to create spaces where intellectual curiosity is rewarded and where their own practices can be influenced in ways that mean our students\u2019 impact is present here long after they graduate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sampling of such related projects included senior <\/span><b>Dylan Grove<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s design of a subsonic wind tunnel for the engineering department; senior <\/span><b>Mario Hernandez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s research into retention in EMU STEM programs; and several senior environmental sustainability capstone projects focusing on Park Woods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junior <\/span><b>Anastasia Dronov<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted research with <\/span><b>Professor<\/b> <b>Tara Kishbaugh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into how chemistry students used (or didn\u2019t use) the arrows of the Electron Pushing Formalism. (Photo by Jon Styer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Skill building for the future<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nursing professor <\/span><b>Laura Yoder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said that the oral presentations and poster sessions provided opportunities for students to practice skills they would need in their professions or in graduate school, but also to share with the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She moderated a session with five students telling of clinical experiences linked to the nursing department&#8217;s Sacred Covenant Model, \u201ctouching on themes of justice, presence, empowerment, service and agape love.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was followed by a more traditional research-oriented presentation on pain management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra chairs were brought to accommodate the crowd, which included students at all stages of their nursing education, from those in the application process to join the program to pre-clinical nursing students, seniors ready to graduate, and family members and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvents like this offer students a chance to pull the conceptual pieces of their learning together and share them with the community,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we connect in unique ways. One family member said how meaningful it was to hear the balance of art and science reflected in the two very different presentations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is one goal of the ACE Festival, said Kniss. \u201cWe hoped this event would showcase the riches of a liberal arts education, and our students have rewarded us all indeed.
