{"id":41644,"date":"2019-03-25T17:42:59","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T21:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=41644"},"modified":"2019-03-25T18:24:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T22:24:40","slug":"emus-d-c-program-offers-policy-and-advocacy-internship-opportunities-to-support-new-majors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/emus-d-c-program-offers-policy-and-advocacy-internship-opportunities-to-support-new-majors\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU&#8217;s D.C. program offers policy and advocacy internship opportunities to support new majors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spring semester visit by Eastern Mennonite University students, history professors <strong>Mark Metzler Sawin<\/strong>, <strong>Mary Sprunger<\/strong> and <strong>Ji Eun Kim<\/strong>, and career services director <strong>Kimberly Phillips<\/strong> highlighted internship opportunities in policy and advocacy through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/wcsc\">Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/a> (WCSC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through its strategic location in Washington D.C. and over 40 years of relationship-building with local organizations, WCSC is well-situated to provide impactful learning and internship experiences for all students, including those in <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/03\/new-programs-of-study-beginning-this-fall-political-and-global-studies\/\">EMU\u2019s new political studies and global studies majors<\/a>. Political studies students will have a semester at WCSC built into their program.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/03\/new-programs-of-study-beginning-this-fall-political-and-global-studies\/\">Learn more about majors in political science and global studies.<\/a><\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWCSC has long-term connections and a history of successful placements with many area organizations working in public policy, advocacy, and international aid, among other fields,\u201d said Director <strong>Kimberly Schmidt<\/strong>. \u201cWe are one of the few liberal arts universities with dedicated buildings and a local staff, which shows a real commitment to offering this kind of resume-building and urban cultural experience to students in all academic programs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the visit, students majoring in history, peacebuilding and development, and global studies learned how their studies might apply to different types of positions and professions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Informing politicians<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41659\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/03\/emus-d-c-program-offers-policy-and-advocacy-internship-opportunities-to-support-new-majors\/img_5143-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41659\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41659 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/03\/IMG_5143-2-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/03\/IMG_5143-2-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/03\/IMG_5143-2-768x506.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/03\/IMG_5143-2-1024x674.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the group included (front row, from left) WCSC director Kimberly Schmidt, students Casey Hertzler and Karen Valdez, Professor Mary Sprunger, and Director of Career Services Kimberly Phillips, and (back, from left), student Lene Andrawas, with professors Joohyun Lee and Mark Sawin. (Photo by Karlyn Gehring)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day began at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcc.org\/get-involved\/advocacy\/washington\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Washington Office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After a tour, the group settled in for a discussion about MCC\u2019s initiatives. MCC staff described how their office brings policy points from the organization\u2019s worldwide peacebuilding and humanitarian projects back to Washington to inform politicians at the national level and advocate for justice issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;MCC&#8217;s D.C. office provides students [with the opportunity] to learn the nuts-and-bolts of advocacy work from within a pragmatic but also deeply Anabaptist setting,\u201d said history professor <strong>Mark Metzler Sawin<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Capital-Area-Anabaptist-Network-CAAN-108228372577889\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capital Area Anabaptist Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a local group that includes several EMU and WCSC program alums, joined the conversation for lunch. (Photo by Karlyn Gehring)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussion of this local landscape offered context for the group\u2019s next stop at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onedconline.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizing Neighborhood Equity (ONE) DC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which engages in community organizing for equity and local housing rights. Here they joined current WCSC students for a special seminar with the organization\u2019s leaders and with intern <strong>Kamran Mamedovi<\/strong>, a second-year graduate student at EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>. Mamedovi and another fellow graduate student are completing a required semester-long practicum while living in community with WCSC students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mamedovi described why he chose ONE DC for his practicum and his initial goal of learning frameworks from the Black struggle for equality in the US that he could apply to situations of ethnic inequality in his home country of Georgia. Along with ONE DC staff, he discussed the organization\u2019s theory of change, which focuses on structural changes that go beyond service and advocacy alone. While Mamedovi noted that the answers to his questions are far more difficult and complex than he had imagined, he holds hope. \u201cThe biggest hope [for structural change] is if you can create an environment where everyone feels ownership and trust\u2013where you feel it\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The politics of climate change<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last stop before heading to the WCSC Nelson Good House for dinner was with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climatenexus.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate Nexus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a communications non-profit focusing on climate change.
