Instead, it was a chance to make a difference \u2013 and learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Y-trips traveled to Puerto Rico, West Virginia, Florida, Georgia and Alabama to volunteer as construction workers and tutors, learn about immigration, and visit key sites of the civil rights movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was a really intense week,\u201d said <\/span><b>Alexa Lahr<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who was part of a group that served at Casa Alterna, a Christian outreach to immigrant families from Latin America located in LaGrange, Georgia. \u201cI learned so much.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Y-trips are coordinated by Y-Serve, formerly known as the Young People\u2019s Christian Association, the longest-running student organization at EMU. It aims to \u201cserve others as the hands and feet of Jesus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Alabama and Georgia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Celeste Thomas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, director of multicultural student services at EMU, led a civil rights tour in Alabama and Georgia that was attended by <\/span><b>Ivan Harris, Jourdyn Friend, Hailey Holcomb, Hannah Nichols, Ezrionna Prioleau, Jakiran JD Richardson, Alex Rosenberg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and<\/span><b> Precious Waddy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Selma they attended the annual Bloody Sunday church service at the Brown Chapel AME Church (as did U.S. Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker and former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton). Members of the group then joined a march with Clinton, Booker, Jesse Jackson and Sheila Jackson, and students participated in a \u201cDead In\u201d on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the week they also visited museums and sites such as Tuskegee University and the Washington Carver museum in Tuskegee; the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist church and Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery; Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham; and Ebenezer Baptist church and the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Birmingham they met Sarah Collins, whose sister was one of the four girls killed when the 16th Street Baptist Church was bombed in 1963.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was amazing to see her and hear her story,\u201d said Harris \u2013 but he found the trip valuable also because it provided him with an understanding of how history continues to live on in current events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen I was growing up, when I was first taught about the subject of black history, I thought that everything that happened in the past just stayed in the past, and I grew up thinking that it really isn\u2019t that much of a problem anymore,\u201d he said. Over the years as he became more aware of racial injustices, however, he decided he wanted to learn more \u2013 and this trip was a chance to study in-depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt turned me into a woken state, and helped me to wake up a lot and realize the reality that we\u2019re really living in,\u201d he said. \u201cBack then, during the civil rights movement, the youth are what helped to spark the movement. &#8230;. We need that same energy today, because the movement\u2019s not over. There\u2019s still a lot more to be done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Florida<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Jonas Beachy, Reuben Peachey-Stoner, Andrew Reimer-Berg, Jonathan Reimer-Berg, Joshua Schlabach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Andrew Schunn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> served with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) in Florida, installing drywall, building walls and more at different worksites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They had time to relax, too: they went birding and swam at Sanibel Island. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Alterna, Lahr and her group mates \u2013<\/span><b> Benjamin Canizales, Anton Flores, Joshua Gomez, Bekah Mongold, Maria Saucedo, Kayley Scottlind <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and co-leaders <\/span><b>Ariel Barbosa <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Otoniel Suero Escalante<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 stayed with host families and tutored elementary school students in the afternoons. Lahr noticed that in spite of the difficulties they faced, the families in the community exhibited happiness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was a reminder to me that you don\u2019t need to be wealthy to be happy,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the group was outside working on a service project, she said, families would bring food or drinks. \u201cIt showed how welcoming they were, even though America isn\u2019t that welcoming towards them. \u2026 We came there to help out, but really, they were showing support for us. It was really cool to see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The group also visited people being held in an immigration detention facility, and on another day went to Alabama to walk the last leg of the Selma-to-Montgomery civil rights march and visit the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. (Photo by Katie Wenger)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Katie Wenger, Silas Driver, Erin Brubaker, Jonah Short-Miller<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Maria Yoder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> volunteered with MDS in Puerto Rico, where they tore down a house destroyed by Hurricane Maria. (Photo by Lydia Haggard)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The group \u2013 <\/span><b>Lydia Haggard, Jack Hummel, Lydia Musselman, Christian Nwankwo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Christiana Nwankwo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 hung drywall, painted, installed flooring, and moved lots of furniture and supplies. But like other groups, the relationships they formed and strengthened were most valuable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was refreshing to be less anxious about getting things done on a checklist and to instead prioritize investing in relationships,\u201d said Haggard. \u201cAs a bonus, I got to learn how to put up drywall!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For more than 30 Eastern Mennonite University students, spring break wasn\u2019t just a chance to get away from classes for a week.
