{"id":41389,"date":"2019-02-25T09:06:50","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T14:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=41389"},"modified":"2019-05-09T08:04:52","modified_gmt":"2019-05-09T12:04:52","slug":"lederach-niwano-peace-prize-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/lederach-niwano-peace-prize-2\/","title":{"rendered":"CJP co-founder and first director John Paul Lederach awarded Niwano Foundation Peace Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Internationally renowned peacebuilder <strong>John Paul Lederach<\/strong>, who has committed his life and work to nonviolent approaches to conflict for more than 40 years, has been awarded the 36th\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npf.or.jp\/english\/\">Niwano Peace Foundation Peace Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/niwano-prize\">Congratulate John Paul Lederach on his award!<\/a><\/aside><\/p>\n<p>Lederach, currently a senior fellow at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humanityunited.org\/\">Humanity United<\/a>, is a co-founder and the first director of the Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020. He holds the title of distinguished scholar and sits on CJP\u2019s Board of Reference. Lederach is also professor emeritus of international peacebuilding at the University of Notre Dame\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kroc.nd.edu\/\">Kroc Institute<\/a>\u00a0for International Peace Studies, where he taught for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>The prize recognizes Lederach\u2019s scholarly and practice work in \u201cmediating conflicts, building peace, and fostering international reconciliation,\u201d according to a Niwano Peace Foundation release. \u201cHe has developed training in conflict transformation and provided direct conciliation support services in some of the most violently conflicted regions across five continents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis books, lectures, workshops and conversations offers grounded, practical insights into the complex nature and dynamics of conflict and how to transform it,\u201d said committee member\u00a0<strong>Ahn Jae Woong<\/strong>,\u00a0immediate past president of the YMCA of Korea and former general secretary of the Christian Conference of Asia.\u00a0\u00a0As with his teaching, his approach is one that encourages people to embody the core principles of the faith tradition that guides them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nominations are solicited annually. Selected by a committee of 11 global religious and spiritual leaders, recipients are honored for their leadership to interreligious cooperation in the cause of peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEMU has benefited greatly from the visionary peace-building leadership of John Paul Lederach, and we extend our congratulations to him on the occasion of this prestigious award,\u201d said President\u00a0<strong>Susan Schultz Huxman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lederach will attend a ceremony May 8 in Tokyo, where he will be presented with a gold medal and the subsidiary prize of $180,000. (EMU file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jantzi particularly praised Lederach\u2019s \u201carticulation, enrichment and expansion\u201d of the concept of peacebuilding through his life of service, pedagogy and practice.<\/p>\n<p>Among the other \u201cextraordinary people\u201d Lederach credits with helping him to \u201cunderstand patient accompaniment and courage in forging peace\u201d are several accomplished CJP graduates and Summer Peacebuilding Institute participants and instructors:\u00a0<b>Hizkias Assefa<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Babu Ayinde MA \u201898,<\/b>\u00a0<b>Rose Barmasai,\u00a0<\/b><b>Dekha Ibrahim,<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Florence Mpaayei<\/b>, of Kenya,\u00a0<b>Emmanuel Bombande MA \u201802<\/b>, from Ghana;\u00a0<b>Joe Campbell MA \u201802<\/b>, from Northern Ireland;\u00a0<b>Ameet Dhakal MA \u201802<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Preeti Thapa<\/b>, from Nepal;\u00a0<b>Sam Doe MA \u201898<\/b>, from Liberia; and\u00a0<b>Myla Leguro<\/b>, from Mindanao.<\/p>\n<p>Lederach also urged inclusive participation of youth and women in national negotiations, conference panels or locally led peace efforts in his acceptance letter.<\/p>\n<p>He also lifted up a unified and faith-filled commitment to discovering, sharing and practicing nonviolent alternatives to conflict: \u201cFor me, the deepest aspirations of my faith tradition provided inspiration to move beyond barriers and boundaries. The infinite, boundless, and audacious love of the Divine toward humanity stirs us to notice and learn from this gifted diversity, to build lasting and improbable friendships across our brokenness, and to fearlessly seek to understand those with whom we disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent recipients of the Niwano Peace Prize include the Adyan Foundation, Lebanon, 2018; Bishop Dr. Munib A.
