In 2017, the Free Clinic, which focuses on uninsured persons with income under 200% of the federal poverty level, provided 4,358 health care service visits, 158 dental visits and 462 behavioral health counseling visits, it reported.<\/p>\n<p>Four MAC students had regular hours this fall (and will again in the spring) at the clinic. They saw clients for a variety of reasons such as grief and loss, anxiety and conflicts in interpersonal relationships, among othe issues, said student <strong>Ana Cruz<\/strong>. They also provided support in setting goals and working toward healing.<\/p>\n<p>The Free Clinic internship has been part of a \u201crich learning experience and has helped shape my educational and career goals,\u201d Cruz said, noting the collaboration of professionals to offer holistic care to the clinic\u2019s clients. \u201cThe quality care that clients receive with the implementation of an integrative model are well worth the challenges that come with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41131\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/01\/counseling-interns-contribute-to-holistic-care-at-the-harrisonburg-rockingham-free-clinic\/20181207-free-clinic-ma-counseling-008-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41131\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41131 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/01\/20181207-Free-Clinic-MA-Counseling-008-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/01\/20181207-Free-Clinic-MA-Counseling-008-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/01\/20181207-Free-Clinic-MA-Counseling-008-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/01\/20181207-Free-Clinic-MA-Counseling-008-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graduate students Allison Funk (left) and Ana Cruz (third from left) with placement supervisor\u00a0Gwen Louden-Gerber and MA in Counseling program director Michael Horst.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Practicing collaboration with medical professionals is a key benefit, said student <strong>Kristen Inouye<\/strong> \u2013 as is getting to work with a diverse, underserved population of individuals that are navigating complex situations.<\/p>\n<p>The interns\u2019 first-hand experiences are teaching them \u201cwhat it means to be a part of an interdisciplinary team \u2013 a very important skill for potential future positions in healthcare organizations,\u201d said placement supervisor <strong>Gwen Louden-Gerber<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The students came to the internships with \u201ca strong sense of the importance of building rapport and the therapeutic relationship, strong skills in empathic listening, a nonjudgmental stance, and respect for the clients\u2019 worldviews and life experiences,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Whether Free Clinic clients\u2019 experiences have negatively impacted their ability to build trust with a counselor or involve struggles such as substance-abusing roommates, they often are carrying \u201can awful lot in their suitcases,\u201d said Free Clinic executive director <strong>Summer Sage<\/strong>. The interns are gaining experience \u201cunpacking all of the different pieces of that suitcase and figuring out how to help the client organize it in a way that is manageable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The practical experience is equipping students to be better-prepared professionals, said Sage. \u201cWe all know that there\u2019s book knowledge and then there\u2019s life experience, and sometimes what the book says doesn\u2019t apply to the life experience.
