{"id":40670,"date":"2018-12-10T09:51:58","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T14:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=40670"},"modified":"2018-12-10T16:07:54","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T21:07:54","slug":"team-readies-for-design-work-on-eu-funded-hypersonic-aircraft-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/team-readies-for-design-work-on-eu-funded-hypersonic-aircraft-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Team readies for design work on EU-funded hypersonic aircraft project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team from Eastern Mennonite University is the first from the United States to join an international collaborative project to design an economically viable, hypersonic, 300-passenger aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The H2020 STRATOFLY academy, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (known popularly as CERN) and the European Space Agency have invited input from university teams through a massive open online platform, said Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=szc6295\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Stefano<\/strong> <strong>Colafranceschi<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its goal is \u201chigh-speed civil passenger transport along antipodal routes in the stratosphere\u201d by 2030-35, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ec_stratofly?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to its Twitter page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40675\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/12\/team-readies-for-design-work-on-eu-funded-hypersonic-aircraft-project\/20181204-super-plane-engineering-001-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40675\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40675\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/12\/20181204-Super-Plane-engineering-001-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/12\/20181204-Super-Plane-engineering-001-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/12\/20181204-Super-Plane-engineering-001-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/12\/20181204-Super-Plane-engineering-001-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Stefano Colafranceschi talks with student members of the new team.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EMU team \u2013 <strong>Isaac Andreas, Duncan Ferency-Viars, Ethan Herman, Jacob Horsley, Philip Park<\/strong> and G<strong>raham Stauffer<\/strong> \u2013 will focus on remote sensing with fiber optics to provide the plane\u2019s pilots and computers with real-time monitoring of plane conditions, and on advanced programmable computer architecture, said Colafranceschi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stauffer, a senior computer science major, said he joined the cross-discipline team to gain hands-on, real-world programming and testing experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to being able to work with new people I haven\u2019t yet gotten to take classes with,\u201d he said, \u201cas well as being able to work on a project that combines my field of study (computer science) with my personal interests in aviation and engineering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Union-funded STRATOFLY project \u201cis highly multidisciplinary and combines technological and operative issues,\u201d its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.h2020-stratofly.eu\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=55&amp;Itemid=233\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states. In addition to economic, public safety and other issues, a new hypersonic jet must integrate \u201cinnovative propulsion systems, unconventional structural configurations and systems for the thermal and energy management\u201d with reduced emissions and noise, among other attributes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International connections \u2013 specifically \u201cgetting to learn from and connect with people from all over\u201d \u2013 drew Andreas, a sophomore math and computer science major, to the project, as did the more immediate experience of being part of the team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCertainly learning collaboration skills will be helpful in the future,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope we can add something substantial from EMU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, Colafranceschi told the team, any contributions to such a project face a tricky test: integration with all other aspects of the plane\u2019s design. That will take research and trial and error. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t expect that whatever you will do will be successful,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are many things that will go wrong.
