{"id":40552,"date":"2018-11-26T17:19:27","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T22:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=40552"},"modified":"2019-01-14T11:50:29","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T16:50:29","slug":"50th-annual-school-for-leadership-training-themed-thriving-in-the-stormy-seas-of-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/50th-annual-school-for-leadership-training-themed-thriving-in-the-stormy-seas-of-change\/","title":{"rendered":"50th annual School for Leadership Training themed \u2018Thriving in the Stormy Seas of Change\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The theme for the 50th annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/seminary\/slt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">School for Leadership Training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (SLT) at Eastern Mennonite Seminary (EMS) \u2013 \u201cThriving in the Stormy Seas of Change\u201d \u2013 reflects both SLT\u2019s ongoing relevance and its half-century legacy of inviting church leaders to join in worship and renewal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Jan. 14-16, 2019, event will highlight the Mark 4:35-41 narrative of Jesus\u2019 crossing the stormy sea with his disciples, and feature keynote speakers John Pavlovitz, Sue Park-Hur and David Evans, plus seminars, facilitated conversation circles and luncheon discussions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, participants are invited to join in worship and sharing, a church leaders\/pastor appreciation breakfast with President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=smh2246\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Susan Schultz Huxman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and a story slam competition in which participants can volunteer to tell humorous stories from their ministry experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The deadline for early registration is Friday, Nov. 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cChurch leaders and pastors are keenly aware of the needs in their congregations,\u201d said SLT coordinator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=vzm579\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Veva Mumaw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cLike other years, this will be a chance for them to find strength to thrive, to be inspired along with other ministers, and to become renewed in their calling to serve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/seminary\/slt\/scholarship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">financial assistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is available through the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thriving in Ministry Lilly grant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for pastors whose continuing education funding is insufficient or who as bi-vocational pastors face financial constraints.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/01\/ems-awarded-nearly-1-million-grant-lilly-endowment-support-pastors-build-thriving-ministries-program\/\">Read more about the Thriving in Ministry Lilly grant<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe seminary\u2019s 50-year commitment to offering School for Leadership Training reflects its steadfast commitment not only to training women and men for ministry but also to supporting and nurturing pastors in the years following their seminary training,\u201d said EMS Thriving in Ministry grant director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=bmh694\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brenda Martin Hurst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who led the SLT planning committee from 2002-07 and is on the committee again this year. \u201cFor the next five years, this grant will support EMS in offering SLT, focusing on helping pastors to thrive and to navigate the transitions they experience in ministry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Keynote speakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pavlovitz will present three keynote addresses. A pastor for two decades, writer and activist from Wake Forest, North Carolina, Pavlovitz blogs about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/johnpavlovitz.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stuff That Needs To Be Said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and has published <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Bigger Table: Building Messy, Authentic, and Hopeful Spiritual Community<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Westminster John Knox Press, 2017) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HOPE and Other Superpowers: A Life-Affirming, Love-Defending, Butt-Kicking, World-Saving Manifesto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Simon &amp; Schuster, 2018). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Park-Hur will provide the first keynote address. The denominational minister for leadership development and transformative peacemaking for Mennonite Church USA, Park-Hur is co-director of the Los Angeles peace center <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/reconciliasian.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ReconciliAsian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> specializing in conflict transformation and restorative justice for immigrant churches. She served as co-lead pastor of Mt. View Mennonite Church in Upland, California, and co-church planter of Church for Others in Temple City. In addition, she taught theological English to pastors from overseas at Fuller Theological Seminary. She is trained in Intercultural Development Inventory and sexual abuse investigations, and is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/star\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> practitioner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Evans will present the fourth keynote address. An associate professor of history and intercultural studies and the director of cross-cultural programs at EMS, Evans focuses his teaching and research on the braided identity categories of race, religion, and nation. He is the co-editor of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between the World of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Christianity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Cascade, 2018), and practices a local \u201ceco-lutionary\u201d lifestyle that promotes an ecologically just future for the diverse people of the Shenandoah Valley watershed. He is a United Methodist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Themes reflect change<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Past themes reflect SLT\u2019s developing and persistent engagement with issues facing church leadership, from 1971\u2019s theme of \u201cThe Church in the 70\u2019s\u201d to 1982\u2019s \u201cCreating a Resourceful Ministry\u201d to 1993\u2019s \u201cWhich Way Worship?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOver the years the themes became more relevant and interesting as opposed to purely academic lectures,\u201d said Linda Alley, an ordained minister and spiritual director who from 2006-16 was involved with SLT as an assistant or director and in previous years participated with her pastor husband and as a seminary student. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Increasing diversity among the attendees led also to a widening array of workshops that met various needs in church leaders: for networking within and across denominational boundaries, for meaningful continuing education, for a chance to experience worship not as leaders but as participants, Alley said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its name\u2019s evolution suggests a broadening understanding of leadership in congregations: The event first took place in 1970, with the name \u201cMinisters Week.\u201d In 1983 the name expanded to \u201cMinister Week: School for Leadership Training.\u201d By the mid-90s it had transitioned to just \u201cSchool for Leadership Training.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt truly was a refreshment to the soul for many busy leaders who needed time for self-care and renewal,\u201d Alley said. She continues to follow the works of two past SLT lecturers in particular, Tilda Norburg (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gestaltpastoralcare.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gestalt Pastoral Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and Ruth Haley Barton (the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/transformingcenter.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transforming Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Learning and sharing in 2019<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s SLT includes a variety of seminars, facilitated conversation circles and luncheon discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seminars will include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBuilding resilience and practicing self-care as pastors\u201d with Park-Hur;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEmbracing the Beauty of Failure\u201d with Pavlovitz;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSuch time as this?\u201d with Victor Gomez, Virginia United Methodist Church Harrisonburg district superintendent;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGather up the Fragments: An Ecclesioculture for Thriving Small Churches\u201d with Bradley Roth, pastor of West Zion Mennonite Church, Moundridge, Kansas;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c\u2018The Thundering Silence\u2019: Hearing and Ministering to Combat Veterans suffering from PTSD and Moral Injury\u201d with Darin Bus\u00e9, pastor of Riverside United Methodist Church, Fulks Run, Virginia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s always been about bodies\u201d with EMS instructor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=mtn695\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mary Thiessen Nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Harrigan McMahan Bowman, an elder at Early Church in Harrisonburg; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cReading the Clouds\u201d with Maren Tyedmers-Hange, co-pastor at Charlottesville (Virginia) Mennonite Church.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facilitated conversation circles will include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Loneliness of Leadership\u201d led by Sue Cockley, EMU dean of graduate and seminary; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPastoring in Polarizing Times\u201d led by Todd Friesen, pastor of East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHelp, I\u2019m a solo pastor!
