With \u201cgot consent?\u201d on the front, and \u201c#IWillTakeBackTheNight\u201d on the back, the shirts were a \u201chuge hit\u201d \u2013 and reflected the events\u2019 focus on consent and awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40411\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40411 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181031-TBTN-Convocation-001-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181031-TBTN-Convocation-001-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181031-TBTN-Convocation-001-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181031-TBTN-Convocation-001-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Organizers Ana Hunter-Nickels (left) and Jasmine Wilson give opening remarks during the Take Back the Night chapel service on Oct. 31.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the 1960s, TBTN events have been held in more than 36 countries and 800 communities, first in Belgium and England and then the \u201870s in Florida and, following the murder there of a woman walking home after work, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to the Take Back the Night Foundation\u2019s website. The foundation seeks \u201cto end sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse and all other forms of sexual violence\u201d and \u201cto create safe communities and respectful relationships through awareness events and initiatives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TBTN events have been held at EMU for about two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, Hunter-Nickels said, event organizers had three goals: to engage the campus community in discussions about sexualized violence, consent, and the complexities of relationships, to engage male-identified persons on campus as a way to make room \u201cfor growth and change,\u201d and to empower people to \u201cmake the change they want to see.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40406\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40406\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40406 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181101-TBTN-Common-Grounds-010-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181101-TBTN-Common-Grounds-010-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181101-TBTN-Common-Grounds-010-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/11\/20181101-TBTN-Common-Grounds-010-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The chapel service concluded with a time for attendees to write #IWill statements related to preventing sexualized violence.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have to become more accountable as a community,\u201d she said, \u201caccountable for holding spaces for conversations, accountable for having available resources for all, accountable for educating all ages, defining consent, and so much more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Events opened with a chapel service that began with the lighting of a candle and time of centering. After a short video about self-accountability, a panel of 11 students, faculty and staff offered reflections about why sexualized violence matters to them. Listen to them, ask the next gentle question, and bear witness to their strength.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three luncheons provided space for people to reflect on their own experiences and share stories, and a closing event for writing notes of encouragement to survivors, to be delivered to a local shelter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI clearly felt a sense of intentionality, understanding, and deep empathy,\u201d Hunter-Nickels said. \u201cHaving these intentional spaces where people could speak openly felt meaningful.
