Bouela Lehbib, a second-year graduate student with Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>, petitioned the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee about the occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco. He represented of the Sahrawi Association for Human Rights during an Oct. 11 committee meeting, one of several days devoted to the topic of decolonization.<\/p>\n

According to UN coverage of the meeting<\/a>, Lehbib shared that:<\/p>\n

he was not yet born when his family and other Sahrawi people had to flee their homes and seek refuge in Algeria.\u00a0 The United Nations has been unable to secure basic human rights for the Sahrawi by allowing MINURSO <\/em>[United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara] to monitor and collect information on Morocco\u2019s violations.\u00a0 \u201cI come from a place where young people like me grow frustrated,\u201d he said, adding:\u00a0\u201cYoung Sahrawis are saying it is time to act, or never.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The multi-day meeting also included presentations from representatives of Cameroon, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and the Russian\u00a0Federation.<\/p>\n

Lehbib is studying at CJP as a Fulbright Scholar<\/a>, the first Saharawi to be awarded funding in the program. He completed undergraduate degrees in communication and journalism, and translation, and then was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to earn a master\u2019s degree at Las Palmas University, Algeria.<\/p>\n

After completing his master’s degree in 2012, he helped establish the first Department of Translation and Interpreting in the Saharawi Ministry for Public Services. He then worked with the international NGO Movement for Peace, Liberty and Disarmament to implement humanitarian projects, such as waste management, food and tents distribution, in the Saharawi refugee camps. His most recent work was for the Danish Refugee Council as a livelihoods team leader.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
