But it wasn\u2019t until his second season coaching a high school basketball team in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia that he saw, very clearly, the need for applied conflict transformation in the athletics context.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40285\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40285\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/10\/sports-for-peace-andrew-daniels-ma-16-on-how-basketball-brings-kids-together\/andrew-daniels-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40285\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40285 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-3.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew Daniels (back row, right) with athletes in one of PeacePlayers international programs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the midst of the heated 2016 presidential campaign season, politically-derived tensions naturally entered into the school environment and trickled down into team dynamics, challenging the boys\u2019 ability to work together. \u201cSome boys supported one candidate in pretty vocal ways and their language, as well as that from other students, made teammates feel like they were being targeted,\u201d Daniels said.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking through possible approaches, he realized that structured dialogue in a calm and supportive environment could potentially help mediate the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Daniels led the team through weekly circle processes, beginning with \u201cour values and relationships,\u201d he said. \u201cAs the weeks went on, we got more into what people were saying and how that made them feel. It made a difference in how the athletes interacted with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Play together, live together&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>That nexus between peacebuilding and sports led Daniels to pursue professional work in the field upon graduation from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a> in 2016.\u00a0<em>Sport for development<\/em>, modeled on the ideals of the Olympic Movement, uses athletics participation as a means of enabling cooperation and peacebuilding among both children and adults. The approach has staunch believers and some dissenters around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Daniels is now an international fellow with the Belfast-based program of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peaceplayers.org\/\">PeacePlayers<\/a>, which combines sports programming with peace education and leadership development for youth in communities in conflict. PeacePlayers also has programs in Cyprus, the Middle East, South Africa, and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do have a lot more optimism than I had before, because now I can see an alternative reality,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cI\u2019ve seen kids from conflict areas, who have had really hard lives, with their arms around each other, building friendships.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Age-graded curriculum<\/h3>\n<p>As a project coordinator in South Belfast, Daniels oversees programs for youth ages 7-18 with the aim of bringing together residents of starkly segregated neighborhoods. Ninety percent of public housing is divided along sectarian lines, and only 7 percent of pupils attend integrated schools, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peaceplayers.org\/location\/northern-ireland\/\">PeacePlayers research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8959\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8959\" style=\"width: 323px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/files\/2018\/09\/38032777_10155977396769039_8963295639479779328_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8959\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/files\/2018\/09\/38032777_10155977396769039_8963295639479779328_n-300x180.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/files\/2018\/09\/38032777_10155977396769039_8963295639479779328_n-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/files\/2018\/09\/38032777_10155977396769039_8963295639479779328_n-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/files\/2018\/09\/38032777_10155977396769039_8963295639479779328_n-660x396.jpg 660w\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PeacePlayers brings kids from different religions together in Northern Ireland to play sports and learn conflict resolution skills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat means many Catholic kids have not set foot in a Protestant school, even if it\u2019s only a few miles away, nor have they really had the opportunity to interact with Protestant kids,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cYou can imagine the long-term effects through adulthood of this deep sectarian segregation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a \u201ctwinning\u201d program for the youngest residents, a Catholic and Protestant school pair up for 12 weeks. Daniels and a team of coaches conduct introductory sessions at the separate schools during the first week. Over the next two weeks, each student group visits its partner school for a welcoming ceremony and tour. \u201cThey see a lot of similarities, of course, with their own schools, which helps to set the stage for relationship-building,\u201d Daniels said.<\/p>\n<p>The following weekly sessions of about two hours are hosted at a neutral site. A rigorous set of \u201cmixer\u201d exercises helps to break down barriers and create integrated teams, which then rotate through 30-minute sessions devoted alternately to basketball skills that demand teamwork and communication and peace education curriculum about topics such as stereotypes, peer influence, symbolism, prejudice and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main objective is to have fun and give the kids an opportunity to interact, and the curriculum is really secondary,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cOne of the program mottos is \u2018Kids who can learn to play together can learn to live together.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Gravitating towards each other<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40284\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40284\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/10\/sports-for-peace-andrew-daniels-ma-16-on-how-basketball-brings-kids-together\/andrew-daniels-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40284\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40284 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/andrew-daniels-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PeacePlayers has programs in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, the Middle East, South Africa and the United States.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Given the space and freedom, kids gravitate towards each other, Daniels said, \u201ceven if what they have in common is that they both dislike basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniels said the change from the first meeting, \u201cwhen the Catholic kids are on one side of the circle and the Protestant kids are on the other side, just looking at each other,\u201d to the final meeting is \u201camazing.\u201d The bonding exercises nudge students together, but it\u2019s the willingness of the children to overcome stereotypes and prejudice that Daniels finds inspiring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne day, early in a program when the two school groups had just met, I noticed one boy keeping to himself, and I was thinking, \u2018How can I get him more engaged?\u2019 I got distracted for a bit, and the next time I looked over, he\u2019d found a kid from the other school group who was also kind of shy, and they bonded over that. By the end of the program, when they had to say their final goodbyes, instead of a high-five, they shared a hug,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of thing that makes me keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Back to his roots<\/h3>\n<p>Daniels also works with Champions 4 Peace, a leadership program offered by invitation to youth ages 14-18 who have been through the twinning program, as well as Belfast Interface League, an evening and after-school program that offers opportunities to play basketball and explore peace education at more advanced levels.<\/p>\n<p>In the gym and in the classroom these last 10 months, Daniels still finds the experience of living and working in Ireland \u201csurreal.\u201d He is walking in the footsteps of one of his heroes: His grandfather, now living in Daniels\u2019 hometown of Roanoke, Virginia, is a Belfast native who immigrated to the United States in the \u201850s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up hearing my grandfather tell stories of the violence in the Ardoyne district. He didn\u2019t exactly have a peaceful time growing up,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cHere I am living in the same city, helping to work on some of the same issues he experienced.
