He also shared a three-point lesson from his own experience as a D.J.-wannabee-turned-pastor:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBe open to the plot twists,\u201d he said, even while being faithful to the reasons behind what you\u2019re doing. \u201cBe open to what friends and family are saying to you, are seeing in you.\u201d And, he said, give yourself \u201cpermission to fail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case in point, he said during his EMU visit: Paul, who wrote the Book of Romans \u2013 a summary of his theology \u2013 to lay the groundwork for fundraising in Rome for an anticipated trip to Spain. Paul never made it to Spain, but succeeded in another way: \u201cHe wrote Romans, and the church has been blessed for 2,000 years,\u201d Cavey said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cavey, who is also speaking at an Eastern Mennonite Seminary chapel service Thursday and interacting with students in multiple other venues, is the senior pastor at The Meeting House. From Oakville, Ontario, the Anabaptist \u201cchurch for people who aren\u2019t into church\u201d provides programming to various sites across Ontario and elsewhere, with community connections taking place through a network of house churches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His books include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reunion: The Good News of Jesus for Seekers, Saints, and Sinners<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Herald Press, 2017) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The End of Religion: Encountering the Subversive Spirituality of Jesus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NavPress, 2007).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cavey said he never wanted to be a pastor \u2013 a \u201cprofessional holy man\u201d \u2013 but a radio disc jockey. First, though, he had questions about himself, and so studied psychology. Then he had bigger questions, and got a master\u2019s degree in theology. Then he accepted an invitation to speak at a small church that his sister attended; the church ended up inviting him to a meeting to explore the possibility of becoming their pastor. He accepted the invitation, but, he broke down and confessed at the meeting, with a bad attitude: he\u2019d come only because he wanted a funny story for his future grandkids. The gathered body counseled him, however, and \u201cbreathed into me a vision of my future that I didn\u2019t even know myself,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now Cavey\u2019s work is dispersed via The Meeting House\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themeetinghouse.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">robust online offerings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to 19 sites, primarily in Ontario. Additional small groups that use its content are in Asia, the Middle East and Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gospel in 30 words, he said, is that \u201cJesus is God with us, come to show us God\u2019s love, save us from sin, set up God\u2019s kingdom and shut down religion so we can share in God\u2019s life.\u201d Living as part of that kingdom has \u201cthis-worldly implications starting here and starting now,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40253\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40253 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181024-Bruxy-Cavey-Convocation-001-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181024-Bruxy-Cavey-Convocation-001-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181024-Bruxy-Cavey-Convocation-001-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181024-Bruxy-Cavey-Convocation-001-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Crawford released an EP &#8220;Honestly&#8221; earlier this fall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cWhat kind of life do you want to live in for eternity?\u201d he asked. \u201cA life of peace? We rush to help the reconciliation process where there is brokenness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The convocation opened with a performance of two songs by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jessicacrawfordmusic.org\/bio\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Crawford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Bridgewater, Virginia, native who attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary and is now based in Nashville.
