{"id":40191,"date":"2018-10-18T10:49:09","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T14:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=40191"},"modified":"2018-10-18T11:36:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T15:36:15","slug":"center-for-interfaith-engagement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/center-for-interfaith-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for Interfaith Engagement celebrates highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Eastern Mennonite University <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/interfaith\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Center for Interfaith Engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (CIE) held its fall reception in September to celebrate the previous academic year and note upcoming events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat lessons have we learned?\u201d CIE director Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=tzs2828\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Timothy Seidel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> asked at the reception. \u201cWhat relationships have been nurtured?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In partnership with other service and learning organizations, CIE provides opportunities for interfaith education and engagement and promotes collaboration among religious and nonreligious scholars and practitioners to build a more just and peaceful world through inter-religious and intercultural understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40193\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/10\/center-for-interfaith-engagement\/20180926-cie-fall-reception-008-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40193\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40193\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180926-CIE-Fall-Reception-008-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180926-CIE-Fall-Reception-008-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180926-CIE-Fall-Reception-008-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180926-CIE-Fall-Reception-008-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ed Martin, former CIE director, discussed a recent learning tour to Iran.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the reception, Seidel highlighted ongoing CIE priorities, which include forming an advisory council, building partnerships with each academic department at EMU, developing opportunities for interfaith experiences and relationships in the broader community, and growing its financial sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ed Martin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/center-for-interfaith-engagement-director-ed-martin-retires-after-six-years-of-facilitating-dialogue-and-scholarly-interaction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">former CIE director<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, shared about a spring 2018 learning tour to Iran \u2013 one of several he has hosted over the years. The delegation included Christian, Muslim, Jain and Zoroastrian participants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Accomplishments<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among other accomplishments this year, CIE provided input into a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/bible\/minors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> new minor in interfaith studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in conjunction with EMU\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/bible\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bible, Religion and Theology Department<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It provides students with opportunities to understand major faith traditions and practice relating across faith differences. Course topics include world religions, comparative monotheisms, philosophy of religion, understanding violent conflict, history of the Middle East and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other noted events included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Turkish author and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> contributor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/11\/let-us-compete-good-visiting-authors-explorations-bridge-religious-differences-islamic-jesus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mustafa Akyol visited EMU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to speak about his new book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Islamic Jesus: How the King of the Jews Became a Prophet of the Muslims<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (St. Martin\u2019s, 2017). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CIE was a sponsor of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.cmu.ca\/dialogue7release\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shia Muslim-Mennonite Christian dialogue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The seventh of its kind over the past sixteen years, this event brought together Shi\u2019a Muslim scholars from Qom, Iran, and Mennonite scholars from Canada and the U.S. \u2013 including EMU professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=pd767\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Peter Dula<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 for presentations and discussions on the topic of religion and youth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A roundtable event, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/03\/center-for-interfaith-engagement-to-host-roundtable-on-mennonite-work-in-interfaith-collaboration\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Borders and Bridges: Reflections on Interfaith Engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d discussed ways that building bridges of practical interfaith collaboration in relief, development, and peacebuilding have served as strategic forms of Christian witness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CIE director Tim Seidel was selected to participate in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/04\/professor-timothy-seidel-to-participate-in-summer-seminar-on-teaching-interfaith-understanding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">spring seminar on teaching interfaith understanding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, organized by the Council of Independent Colleges and Interfaith Youth Core. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Along with renowned peacebuilding scholar and practitioner Mohammed Abu-Nimer, Seidel co-edited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rowman.com\/isbn\/9781498537513\/the-hizmet-movement-and-peacebuilding-global-cases\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Hizmet Movement and Peacebuilding<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Lexington, 2018). This new book assesses the peacebuilding implications and societal impact of the Hizmet Movement, presenting cases that provide a counter to negative stereotypes of Islam with examples of positive educational institutions rooted in Islamic values. The book includes contributions from scholars and practitioners around the world that critically explore the intersection of the movement and peacebuilding in countries such as Northern Iraq, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Upcoming events<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the next year, CIE will help organize the summer 2019 Interfaith Peace Camp and continue to support Mennonite Church USA\u2019s new Mennonite Jewish Relations Work Group, said CIE associate director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=trottert\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trina Trotter Nussbaum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CIE, Eastern Mennonite Seminary and the Center of Justice and Peacebuilding will co-host a Nov. 8-9 visit of Daoud Nassar, a Palestinian Christian who will share about faith and the challenges of living in the occupied West Bank. He will also discuss the Tent of Nations initiative on his family farm there, which brings together people from many different countries to learn from and increase understanding and hope through personal connections.
