{"id":40183,"date":"2018-10-17T10:35:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T14:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=40183"},"modified":"2018-10-17T10:35:33","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T14:35:33","slug":"brian-plum-01-named-chairman-of-the-virginia-association-of-community-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/brian-plum-01-named-chairman-of-the-virginia-association-of-community-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"Brian Plum &#8217;01 named chairman of the Virginia Association of Community Banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2001 alumnus of Eastern Mennonite University has been named the chairman of the Virginia Association of Community Banks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Plum, the president and CEO of Blue Ridge Bankshares, Inc. and CEO of Blue Ridge Bank in Luray, Virginia, was installed as chairman on Monday, Oct. 15. During his one-year term he will lead the association\u2019s efforts in advocacy, education and training for the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCommunity banks are critical drivers of economic activity in communities of all shapes and sizes, from rural areas with limited financial services to urban areas with dynamic and growing entrepreneurial communities,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are focused on creating financial solutions that invest in the local economy and help it to grow and prosper.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/01\/35-year-old-alum-named-president-of-blue-ridge-bank-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plum assumed the presidency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Blue Ridge Bank in 2014, becoming the 11th in its 125 years. He joined the bank as its chief financial officer in 2006, having worked for PBMares, LLP, an accounting firm in Harrisonburg. He continues to maintain his certified public accountant license.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At EMU he majored in <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/business\/accounting\/\">accounting<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/business\/economics\/\">economics<\/a> and minored in <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/history\/minors\">political science<\/a>. In 2003, he earned a master\u2019s degree in accounting from James Madison University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a seasoned business leader, he has a wealth of advice for recent graduates: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work hard, but never let work define you. Be true to yourself. Act justly and uprightly at all times; don\u2019t fall into the trap of thinking there is a difference between you the person and you the businessperson. Find a mentor, someone you look up to in business and trust for guidance in your career \u2013 and use them as a resource. Accept that you will make mistakes, but commit to learn from them. Be grateful.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He notes as a guiding principle the Scouts charge from Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell \u2013 \u201cLeave this world a little better than you found it\u201d \u2013 and sees immense potential to do that through community banking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have a positive impact on our communities, customers, and employees every day,\u201d he said. \u201cMany jobs would not exist today if not for community banks, and many charitable organizations would not be able to serve at the level they do without the volunteerism and financial support of community banks and community bankers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 2001 alumnus of Eastern Mennonite University has been named the chairman of the Virginia Association of Community Banks.
