{"id":39986,"date":"2018-10-08T10:57:34","date_gmt":"2018-10-08T14:57:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=39986"},"modified":"2018-10-10T11:10:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T15:10:15","slug":"scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU awards 27 scholarships for education, engineering, music and photography and digital media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twenty-seven first-year students at Eastern Mennonite University have received new departmental scholarships for studies in education, engineering, music, and photography and digital media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/financial-aid\/departmental-scholarships\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">scholarships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, of up to $3,000, can be renewed for four years and are in addition to their basic financial aid packages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EDUCATION<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39976\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/10\/education-majors-receive-scholarships-at-eastern-mennonite-university\/20180910-education-scholarship-winners-001-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-39976\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39976\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180910-Education-scholarship-winners-001-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180910-Education-scholarship-winners-001-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180910-Education-scholarship-winners-001-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20180910-Education-scholarship-winners-001-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Skyar Hedgepeth, Tristin Hogge and Rachel Lute are three of the seven scholarship winners in the education department.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Education at EMU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> takes students into K-12 classrooms just weeks into their first semester, and forms reflective and engaging teachers that are highly sought after: In the year after finishing their studies, all of the 2017 program graduates who sought employment in PreK-12 education settings were employed.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Emma Cordell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Chambersburg, Pennsylvania), an elementary education major, chose to attend the program because of its good reputation and size, she said, in order to learn \u201calongside others interested in the same things and field as I am.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Christine Gray<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Culpeper, Virginia) is a history education major preparing to teach in a middle school and \u201cmake an impact on my students,\u201d she said. She was drawn to EMU for its size and, as she is \u201ca pacifist, and passionate about sustainability,\u201d its faith emphasis. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Skylar Hedgepeth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Smithfield, Virginia) plans to use her elementary education and English as a Second Language qualifications to teach English internationally. She came to EMU to learn from \u201cprofessors who demonstrate compassionate and diverse teaching strategies\u201d in a \u201cclose-knit community and Christian environment.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Tristin Hogge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Smithfield, Virginia) came to EMU for its education and cross-cultural programs, and plans to become a middle school math teacher. In high school she took a class titled \u201cVirginia Teachers for Tomorrow,\u201d and is now eager to get into school classrooms early in this first year of university studies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Isaac Longacre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Quakertown, Pennsylvania) most enjoyed choir in high school \u2013 his vocal music teacher was <\/span><b>Rodney Derstine \u201874<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 and came to EMU to become a high school music teacher. The professors he met here as a prospective student were not only passionate about their subject matter, but also \u201cinterested in knowing their students,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Rachel Lute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (New Market, Virginia) said that many of her high school teachers studied at EMU, including her concert choir teacher <\/span><b>Heidi Bauman King \u201812<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cI look forward to learning all the \u2018ins and outs\u2019 of teaching,\u201d Lute said, and more about restorative justice in the classroom. She is majoring in early childhood education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Hannah Neebe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Woodbridge, Virginia) is an elementary education major with a music minor. (Photo by Macson McGuigan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ENGINEERING<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/engineering\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engineering at EMU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides students with one-on-one mentors, research opportunities and a spectrum of liberal arts skills that have a proven track record, as 98 percent of EMU graduates seeking jobs land degree-relevant employment within a year \u2013 or have jobs lined up even before they graduate. The program is housed in brand new facilities as a result of the most recent Suter Science Center renovation completed this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Jonas Beachy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Grants Pass, Oregon) enjoys the real-life engineering applications of math problems; he\u2019s majoring in both engineering and math, with a Spanish minor. While he came to EMU to make friends and connections and gain knowledge, he also wanted \u201can Anabaptist education that would provide me the tools to succeed in engineering,\u201d he said, so that in his career he \u201ccan contribute to creating a better future for all.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Malachi Malone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Midland, North Carolina) has Silicon Valley dreams \u2013 to work for Apple as a software engineer. He\u2019s majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in writing, and said he chose EMU for its size and surrounding area. He is looking forward to \u201cbeing a part of the small, uplifting and helpful community at EMU.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Laura Troyer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Millersburg, Ohio) competed in competitions in high school that ultimately helped her find her passion for problem-solving, something already being put to use at EMU: Her introduction to engineering class is designing the set for the spring theater production. \u201cI\u2019m excited to learn about the engineering process while doing something that will actually get to be used by others,\u201d she said. In her college search she settled on EMU because \u201cit felt like the place that I could most easily call my home. (Photo by Andrew Strack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The music scholarships are available to non- music majors who audition successfully and commit to participating in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/music\/ensemble\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">music ensembles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/music\/scholarship-application\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scholarships for music majors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are also available.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Emily Davis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (King George, Virginia) has played in orchestras or for musicals since fourth grade. Also a softball player, she is studying biology with a goal of working in physical therapy or radiology. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Elizabeth Eby <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Goshen, Indiana) graduated from high school with an award for having led music for chapel services and participated in musicals, choir and original musical dramas. Now she\u2019s studying peacebuilding and development to \u201cmake an impact wherever I may be needed,\u201d perhaps in mediation, advocacy or policy formation. Music, she said, isn\u2019t just about sound, she said: \u201cSinging with other people and listening to the harmonies that are formed in community is one of the only true spiritual experiences I\u2019ve had. I\u2019m excited to feel that in this new community.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Stephanie Kniss<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Chambersburg, Pennsylvania) is majoring in global development and writing studies, but is also looking forward to building on her experiences in her high school\u2019s select and touring choirs through \u201cthe dynamic of a college-level choir,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Rachel Lute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (New Market, Virginia) was accepted by audition to all-district band, Virginia Tech\u2019s Honor Band and all-district and all-state choirs in high school. Now she\u2019s studying to become an elementary school teacher, and said she has \u201clots of positive energy\u201d to contribute to the EMU music scene.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When <\/span><b>Mary Miller-Eshleman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Dover, Ohio) visited campus as a prospective student, she thought the \u00a0\u201csmall community atmosphere\u201d would be \u201ca good place to build a community away from home,\u201d she said, noting its \u201cfirm standing in Jesus as a peacemaker.\u201d She\u2019s studying psychology and, as she did in high school, participating in orchestra and musical events.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Hannah Neebe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Woodbridge, Virginia) is studying to be an elementary school teacher and has a music minor. A French horn player, her high school experiences included marching, concert, symphonic and festival bands as well as a stint during middle school as the band directors\u2019 teacher\u2019s assistant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Jonathan Reimer-Berg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Salem, Oregon) plans to become a math teacher. In high school he accumulated several musical honors: he was a three-time member of the all-city orchestra; district second for solo and ensemble duet; a member of the chamber orchestra, which took second place at state for three consecutive years; and three-time state champion symphony. EMU, he said, is \u201ca small school with people that have values similar to my own\u201d where he can play \u201cfun music with cool people.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Partha Roy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Takoma Park, Maryland) spent his high school years in band and chorus, and played the lead role in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Fantasticks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, plus performed Broadway songs as part of a group pulled together by his principal. His dream job is working as a flight attendant and traveling the world. He has not yet decided on a major.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Andrew Stoltzfus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Harrisonburg) is in EMU\u2019s pre-med program, but also enjoys being onstage and performing; he also has a theater minor. In high school he was in a small group and the choir, and played strings, and received an award for his music involvements. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Katherine Szambecki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Newton, Kansas), an English major, hopes to be an editor and writer. She played in her high school\u2019s orchestra and as part of many chamber groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Avery Trinh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Columbia, Maryland), a psychology major with a math minor, played in his high school\u2019s wind ensemble and marching band, and was lead tenor for the jazz band. (Photo by Macsno McGuigan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These scholarships are awarded to students with exemplary portfolios of creative work who plan to study <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/vaca\/photography\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">photography<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/vaca\/digital-media\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/vaca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">visual and communication arts (VACA) program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Asha Beck<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Linville, Virginia) has long been interested in environmentally sustainable and community-connecting architecture. She is at EMU to gain \u201ca wider perspective\u201d about how the designing of spaces and colors can impact individuals and communities, she said. In addition to the academics, though, she is eager for \u201cnew faith perspectives on life and academics.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Jeremy Blain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Meriden, Connecticut) took three years of classes as well as an independent study in photography in high school \u2013 and won an advanced photography award plus chaired an art show for two years. He came to EMU for its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/vaca\/conservation-photography\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conservation nature photography<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offerings and has a long-term goal of working as a photographer for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Geographic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Tyler Johnson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Roanoke, Virginia) practiced his photography skills while travelling through six countries last year, and took design classes at a community college. At EMU he\u2019s majoring in digital media and communication to prepare for a career in graphic design.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Eric Ocaranza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Highland, Virginia) is an aspiring photojournalist and nature and sports photographer majoring in photography, an EMU program he said is \u201camazing.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>McKenzie VanHandel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Cream Ridge, New Jersey) came to EMU for the small-school community and four-year photography major.
