{"id":39959,"date":"2018-10-08T11:28:31","date_gmt":"2018-10-08T15:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=39959"},"modified":"2018-11-05T15:17:38","modified_gmt":"2018-11-05T20:17:38","slug":"pediatric-oncologist-dr-trent-hummel-97-to-present-homecoming-suter-science-seminar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/pediatric-oncologist-dr-trent-hummel-97-to-present-homecoming-suter-science-seminar\/","title":{"rendered":"Pediatric oncologist Dr. Trent Hummel \u201897 to present Homecoming Suter Science Seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital Medical Center associate professor of pediatrics Dr. Trent Hummel \u201897 will present a Suter Science Seminar at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 9 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hummel will discuss <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/science-seminars\/docs\/Hummel-SuterScienceSeminarFlier2018-19.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Targeted Therapies in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology: Lessons from the Past, Hope for the Future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The seminar in Science Center Room 106 is free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Certain pediatric cancers such as leukemia have seen a marked increase in survival while others, such as progressive brain tumors, have remained difficult to treat. A palpable change in pediatric oncology is taking place: the genomic details of an individual\u2019s tumor are now playing a prominent role in the treatment of aggressive tumors. Additionally, attempting to harness a patient\u2019s immune system may also lead to positive outcomes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hummel will discuss the concept of personalized medicine, specifically in pediatric neuro-oncology, and the potential pitfalls of immune-therapy in pediatric brain tumors. He will also attempt to give general advice for those in the audience desiring to pursue academic medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hummel received his bachelor\u2019s degree from EMU and his MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed a pediatric residency at Children\u2019s Hospital Medical Center of Akron and a subsequent pediatric hematology\/oncology fellowship at Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital Medical Center. His clinical and academic interests focus on developing novel therapeutics for children with brain and spinal cord tumors, including very poor-prognosis tumors such as high-grade gliomas and diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas. He spends a portion of his summers as the medical director of Camp NJoyItAll, a camp for kids with cancer and blood disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the third of five <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/science-seminars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Suter Science Seminars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> this fall, which are made possible by the sponsorship of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/science-seminars\/daniel-b-suter-endowment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daniel B.
