{"id":39699,"date":"2018-09-21T12:25:47","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T16:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=39699"},"modified":"2018-09-24T10:23:01","modified_gmt":"2018-09-24T14:23:01","slug":"engineering-interns-build-create-learn-a-potato-chip-factory-roof-hydraulics-software-development-tools-and-marshmallows-among-summer-experiences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/engineering-interns-build-create-learn-a-potato-chip-factory-roof-hydraulics-software-development-tools-and-marshmallows-among-summer-experiences\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering interns build, create, learn: A potato chip factory roof, hydraulics, software development tools \u2013 and marshmallows \u2013 among summer experiences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve seen them, those little sugar-covered marshmallows in shapes of chicks or bunnies, bright pink or yellow, so sweet you can hardly tolerate eating them without first dipping them in dark chocolate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re called Peeps, and not every university student gets to box and unbox such delights \u2013 over and over again \u2013 in the name of pursuing a STEM degree. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But listen, peeps: Ben Stutzman isn\u2019t every student.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stutzman was one of five Eastern Mennonite University STEM students \u2013 along with Ben Zook, Dylan Grove, Andrew Troyer* and Austin Engle \u2013 to gain real-world experience through internships this summer at engineering firms in a variety of areas: buildings, hydraulics, software and yes, Peeps.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/engineering\/\">engineering at EMU<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stutzman assisted an engineer at JLS Automation in York, Pennsylvania, on a Peeps packaging system project. In May it was just a frame, but by the end of the summer he was helping with final testing of the 100-feet-long system that included four machines for folding and glueing boxes, 16 robotic arms for boxing the marshmallow creatures, and plastic wrap box wrappers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One task was testing the system by switching out robotic parts and adjusting machinery so that it could switch from handling Peeps chicks to Peeps bunnies. That meant \u201cloading hundreds of Peeps onto a conveyor belt, looking for problems and making adjustments as they went down the line and got packaged, and then opening up all of the packages to start over again,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39706\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39706\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39706\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180803-Ben-Stutzman-JLS-Automation-023-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180803-Ben-Stutzman-JLS-Automation-023-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180803-Ben-Stutzman-JLS-Automation-023-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180803-Ben-Stutzman-JLS-Automation-023-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39706\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Testing the packaging system meant\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cloading hundreds of Peeps onto a conveyor belt, looking for problems and making adjustments as they went down the line and got packaged, and then opening up all of the packages to start over again,\u201d Stutzman said.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was amazed by all the components and people that it takes to assemble such a huge system, and all the hours of testing and troubleshooting required to make it work well,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was so cool to see everyone\u2019s hard work pay off during the final testing at the end of the summer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, he made tool prototypes for handling food samples (such as a bag of tartar sauce), and he managed the company\u2019s 3D printers; he and another intern even built one from a kit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt takes a lot of practice to be able to 3D<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">print something well,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can\u2019t just press a button and get a perfect result every time. I\u2019ve enjoyed learning about all the settings to adjust depending on your model and the printer you\u2019re using, and also how to manage time and materials efficiently when you have multiple people who want things printed as soon as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he\u2019s not sure yet what specific field he wants to enter, Stutzman said that the experience \u201cconfirmed my interest in engineering in general, since I really enjoy the problem-solving and creative nature of what I got to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Potato chip factory roof<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39704\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39704 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180802-Ben-Zook-Engineering-Solutions-014-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180802-Ben-Zook-Engineering-Solutions-014-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180802-Ben-Zook-Engineering-Solutions-014-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180802-Ben-Zook-Engineering-Solutions-014-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben Zook helped design a potato chip factory roof. \u201cLearning how to learn is more significant than memorizing facts, equations and techniques,\u201d he said.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zook worked closely with employees at the Harrisonburg structural engineering firm Engineering Solutions on projects that included visiting job sites and using software for drafting. He also helped design a potato chip factory roof. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was fun to think that this 3D-rendered object on my computer screen would eventually be built in the next couple months, providing help for a local company,\u201d he said. The placement, with work days \u201cfull of new challenges\u201d and variety, bolstered his confidence in his engineering plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also realized the importance of a key component of his education at EMU: \u201cLearning how to learn is more significant than memorizing facts, equations and techniques,\u201d he said. \u201cEMU has truly set me up for this realization because the classroom setting is built around improving the learning process and critical thinking skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Moving from 3D-printed to metal parts <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Grove\u2019s internship at Venture Products in Orrville, Ohio, he focused on hydraulic systems research, which included designing machine parts. The experience allowed him to take the skills he has developed at EMU \u2013 problem-solving, time management, systems thinking, general physics and mechanics understanding, and math \u2013 to the next level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt EMU I have enjoyed designing parts and having them come to life in the form of 3D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">printed plastic. At Venture Products, I have been able to take that a step further and have my designed parts turn into formed metal. It has been really cool to think that I can design whatever component I need, and it will show up on my desk in a matter of days,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grove also observed engineers \u201ccarrying design projects through from start to finish in an organized and well-managed fashion,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really a big balancing act, and I\u2019m very impressed with how these engineers handle it all. They work together and communicate effectively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when he needed it, the Venture Products staff took the time to \u201cdrop whatever they were doing to come help me,\u201d he said. \u201cOver and over, I felt the encouragement to learn as much as I could.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was an \u201ceye-opening\u201d experience, and a \u201cbig opportunity,\u201d he said. \u201cI could definitely see myself working in a place like this for the long term.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Classroom learning made practical<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39707\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39707 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180817-Austin-Engle-Rosetta-Stone-009-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180817-Austin-Engle-Rosetta-Stone-009-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180817-Austin-Engle-Rosetta-Stone-009-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/20180817-Austin-Engle-Rosetta-Stone-009-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39707\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Austin Engle said that the internship helped him experience how classroom learning is applied in practice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Engle said his internship at the language-learning software company Rosetta Stone in Harrisonburg affirmed his interests in computer science, engineering and physics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tasked with helping to create tools for the software company to improve its products, he also learned \u201chow larger companies work\u201d and communicate, in part through participating in team and quarterly planning meetings and discussions about his and other projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One days-long meeting included participants from around the world, including several from Croatia.
