{"id":39556,"date":"2018-09-12T06:30:34","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T10:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=39556"},"modified":"2018-11-14T12:50:44","modified_gmt":"2018-11-14T17:50:44","slug":"voices-of-conscience-exhibit-at-emu-to-highlight-prophetic-insights-and-personal-courage-of-wwi-peace-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/voices-of-conscience-exhibit-at-emu-to-highlight-prophetic-insights-and-personal-courage-of-wwi-peace-protesters\/","title":{"rendered":"Voices of Conscience exhibit and lectures to highlight \u2018prophetic insights and personal courage\u2019 of WWI peace protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An exhibit and guest speakers at Eastern Mennonite University this fall will highlight the stories of conscientious objectors (COs) in World War I.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anabaptisthistorians.org\/\">Read an exhibit review by EMU archivist Simone Horst.<\/a><\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVoices of Conscience: Peace Witness in the Great War\u201d will be open at the Sadie\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hartzler Library<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular library hours<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Oct. 1 &#8211; Nov. 17. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibit \u201clifts up the prophetic insights and the personal courage of World War I peace protesters, and suggests parallels to the culture of war and violence in our world today,\u201d according to\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/kauffman.bethelks.edu\/Traveling%20Exhibits\/Voices-of-Conscience\/index.html\">Kauffman Museum<\/a> in North Newton, Kansas.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Motivated by a variety of reasons both religious and secular, resisters of U.S. involvement faced humiliation, imprisonment and violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Great War sucked a generation of life out of Europe, and called into question the West\u2019s self-perception as enlightened and progressive,\u201d library director <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=gmf2227\">Marci Frederick<\/a> said. \u201cMany of today\u2019s issues \u2013 massive human displacement, race-based nationalism, the economic costs of war, and colonialism \u2013 first came into focus during the first World War. Among those issues was the question of how Christians would respond to government commands to kill, including the killing of other Christians. This exhibit confronts us with that question, too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39558\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39558\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39558 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/VOC-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/VOC-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/VOC-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/09\/VOC-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Voices of Conscience exhibit includes a recreation of an Alcatraz prison cell where conscientious objectors were punished.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developed by the Kauffman Museum in North Newton, Kansas, the exhibit is on a seven-states tour. Its 10 themes are presented with text and quotes, large-scale graphics and photomurals surrounding a recreation of an Alcatraz prison cell where conscientious objectors were punished. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A related display showcases materials from EMU\u2019s Archives, including papers and photos from eight conscientious objectors<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relating to their conscription, time spent in military camps, work during the war, and their discharge. Included Virginia Mennonite Conference Archives materials highlight the trial of Rhine Benner and L. J. Heatwole, charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 after telling congregants not to buy U.S. bonds and War Savings Stamps. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Related lectures<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Thursday, Oct. 4, Martin Chapel, 7 p.m.: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phil Kniss, senior pastor at Park View Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg, will tell the story of his grandfather Lloy Kniss, who was drafted and ordered to train at Camp Greenleaf in Georgia, in a talk titled \u201cLloy Kniss and Mennonite conscientious objection to World War I.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wednesday, Oct. 17, MainStage Theater, 4 p.m.:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Duane Stoltzfus, professor of communication at Goshen College and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacifists in Chains: The persecution of Hutterites during the Great War <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Johns Hopkins, 2013), will present \u201cOn the Front Lines of Conscience: An Account of Four Hutterites Imprisoned at Alcatraz\u201d during a university colloquium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>[CANCELLED] Tuesday, Nov. 6, Martin Chapel, 7 p.m.:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> EMU President <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=smh2246\">Susan Schultz Huxman<\/a> will draw on her dissertation research as she speaks on \u201cAmerican Mennonites, the WWI Experience, and a \u2018Third Way\u2019 Rhetorical Crucible.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>[CANCELLED] Thursday, Nov. 15, Martin Chapel, 7 p.m.:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anne Yoder, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/02\/new-website-curated-by-swarthmore-archivist-anne-yoder-81-features-world-war-i-conscientious-objectors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">archivist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Swarthmore College\u2019s Peace Collection, will present \u201cExpanding the Narrative: WWI conscientious objectors in their own words.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople often hear only the experiences of COs who were from the Historic Peace Churches, and they are usually filtered through the perspective of an historian,\u201d Yoder said \u2013 whereas learning through primary documents can bring to light additional complexities in their varied experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is important to me that we tell the whole story,\u201d she said. \u201cThen everyone is recognized who took a stand for the cause of conscience, and, hopefully, young people today are encouraged to realize that they, too, have a right to conscientious objection \u2013 whether for religious or other reasons \u2013 and a responsibility to be speaking out against, or thinking at least about the evils of war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An exhibit and guest speakers at Eastern Mennonite University this fall will highlight the stories of conscientious objectors (COs) in World War I. \u201cVoices of Conscience: Peace Witness in the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/voices-of-conscience-exhibit-at-emu-to-highlight-prophetic-insights-and-personal-courage-of-wwi-peace-protesters\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"more-link\">... read more <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">about Voices of Conscience exhibit and lectures to highlight \u2018prophetic insights and personal courage\u2019 of WWI peace protesters<\/span><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"author":265,"featured_media":39557,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[266,5583,17562],"tags":[17530,17520],"feature":[17426,17241],"class_list":["post-39556","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alumni","category-campus-community","category-digest","tag-marci-frederick","tag-susan-schultz-huxman","feature-myemu-feature","feature-news-feature"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
