{"id":38854,"date":"2018-07-05T10:38:21","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T14:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=38854"},"modified":"2018-07-17T10:09:20","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T14:09:20","slug":"cjp-student-participates-in-historic-first-use-of-restorative-justice-in-north-carolina-felony-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/cjp-student-participates-in-historic-first-use-of-restorative-justice-in-north-carolina-felony-case\/","title":{"rendered":"CJP student participates in historic use of restorative justice in North Carolina felony case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YoungJi Jang graduated from Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CJP) not just with a master\u2019s degree in conflict transformation, but also deep belief in restorative practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her practicum at the Restorative Justice Clinic (RJC) at Campbell Law School in Raleigh, North Carolina, Jang saw her theory of change \u2013 that increased understanding builds trust, which fosters relationships, which in turn enable better ways of dealing with conflict to make communities more healthy and sustainable \u2013 play out in a variety of practicum settings: the legal system, a prison and local schools. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, she participated in victim-offender dialogue in a ground-breaking felony case in the state, and facilitated both restorative circles in Butner prison and restorative dialogue in school settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collaborative placement at RJC grew out of years of connection between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=zehrh\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howard Zehr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of EMU\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/zehr-institute.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zehr Institute for Restorative Justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and his co-director professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=cds494\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carl Stauffer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and RJC director Jon Powell, who with another RJC staff member Joia Caron traveled to attend Jang\u2019s presentation in Harrisonburg from North Carolina. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38855\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38855\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38855 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/07\/20180507-Youngji-Jang-CJP-capstone-5-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/07\/20180507-Youngji-Jang-CJP-capstone-5-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/07\/20180507-Youngji-Jang-CJP-capstone-5-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/07\/20180507-Youngji-Jang-CJP-capstone-5-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">YoungJi Jang (center) poses following her practicum presentation with (left to right) CJP Professor Carl Stauffer, her mother Myounghee Lee, and\u00a0Campbell University Restorative Justice Center office manager Joia Carson and director Jon Powell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s very important for us to have that kind of relationship with this program,\u201d Powell said, adding that Jang \u201cis going to do great things\u201d in restorative justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis type of cross-institutional collaboration is key to the efficacy of restorative justice practice,\u201d Zehr said. \u201cNot only do students benefit, but so do the institutions and communities in which they work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/05\/cjps-2018-graduates-share-research-practicum-learnings\/\"><strong>Read about other\u00a0research, practicum learnings by CJP&#8217;s 2018 graduates.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RJC and Jang were involved in facilitated dialogue in a high-profile felony case involving a shooting that injured a child but ended in restitution for the victim and her family and community service \u2013 but also forgiveness, \u201ctears of happiness\u201d and hugs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2017, a bullet fired by James Scott Berish struck a 10-year-old sleeping girl in a lower apartment in Durham. Berish initially fled the scene, but later turned himself in to police. The prosecuting attorney assigned to the case had attended an RJC restorative justice training, and realized this case was suited to the process, said Powell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I see in Mr. Berish is a man taking full responsibility, a man who made a mistake and owns it,\u201d said assistant district attorney <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indyweek.com\/news\/archives\/2018\/04\/05\/durham-man-pleads-guilty-in-historic-restorative-justice-case\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kendra Montgomery-Blinn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhat I see in Deisy and her family is a family who was wounded physically and emotionally, a family who asked for healing, a family who got answers to their questions and a family who found peace and forgiveness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jang remembered the words of the judge following Berish\u2019s sentencing hearing: \u201cWhat does justice look like? Each of the people in this room might have different idea about what it looks like. However, this morning we know what it feels like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the federal correctional complex at Butner, Jang facilitated restorative circles of inmates and community members who met to tell each other their stories as a means of restoration. In different grade levels in schools, she helped students to resolve conflicts and to learn alternative ways of dealing with future conflicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis work is building relationships based on really good understanding and hearing stories,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you share, and if you\u2019ve heard somebody\u2019s story, then you might not judge them then at all, because you know then truly who they are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jang plans to attend law school and promote the use of restorative justice in her home country of South Korea, following additional practical training in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>YoungJi Jang graduated from Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP) not just with a master\u2019s degree in conflict transformation, but also deep belief in restorative practices.
