(Courtesy photo by Christy Kauffman)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This spring, groups posted a variety of reflections about and photos of their experiences in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/category\/india-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/category\/guatemala-cuba-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guatemala and Cuba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU cross-cultural blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While summer groups post less due to their condensed schedules, the travels to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/2018\/05\/25\/exploring-paraguay-asuncion-to-the-chaco\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paraguay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/2018\/06\/05\/kenya-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Bulgaria and Greece, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/06\/thirteen-living-and-working-in-d-c-for-wcsc-summer-term\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington D.C.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/2018\/06\/04\/lithuania\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithuania<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have provided opportunity for reflection and photography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Lithuania, Isaiah Harris-Winn wrote of visiting beautiful cities and memorial sites \u201cfor the people who gave their lives for freedom for their people and country\u201d and those executed for faith or race. \u201cThese sites help paint the picture that injustices are all around us,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThese people were selfless and thought about others before themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s more information from the leaders of this summer\u2019s cross culturals:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/marginalized-europe-2018\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulgaria and Greece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, May 19-June 30, led by Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=apw677\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew White<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and his wife Daria White: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For centuries the Balkans (SE Europe) have been viewed as a civilizational \u201cbridge,\u201d a link between the West and the East. This cross-cultural is exploring the marginal(ized) status of people who live in the SE Balkans, with particular focus on Bulgaria, a relatively unknown nation and the poorest country in the European Union.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/kenya-2018\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, May 8-30, led by Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=allenr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roxann Allen Kioko<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and her husband, Felix Kioko: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenya is not only the most stable and economically advanced country in East Africa, it is also diverse with over 40 different tribes and extreme income inequality as a former British colony. Its capital city, Nairobi, is seen as a hub for East and Central Africa and many international NGOs. Tourism and agriculture power its economy.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/lithuania-2018\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithuania<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, May 9-June 25, led by Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=holsoppj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerry Holsopple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithuania is a culture where ancient religion and modern ideology is being challenged by Western consumer culture. North America is a secular, highly religious (often civil), pluralistic, producer of popular culture products exported on the global scale, while Lithuania is just 20+ years beyond the Soviet Occupation. It provides an intriguing locale for exploring the complexity of South American culture. Strong contrasts between modern urban living in Asuncion and agrarian, rural colonies in the Chaco highlight the variety of cultures within Paraguay. <\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington D.C. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/wcsc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Community Scholars\u2019 Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gain experience with vocational development, group living, and coursework on urban topics in this cross-cultural context.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall 2018 semester trips will include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/china-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by professors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=sprungms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Sprunger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=bylerme\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myrrl Byler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go behind the history textbooks and headline news to experience the real China.
