Thirteen students with WCSC this summer recently took an excursion with Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=rmg2523\">Ryan Good<\/a> to explore housing and employment as part of their interdisciplinary seminar on urban studies. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And on the way, they caught a bit of the excitement around the Stanley Cup playoffs and the hometown hopes for the Washington Capitals.<\/p>\n<p>A semester in the capital, whether in summer, spring or fall, always offers \u201camazing opportunities,\u201d says Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=kds273\">Kimberly Schmidt<\/a>, program director.\u201cThis program combines on-the-job experience in the field as well as a rich cultural and urban experience, and the fun of exploring the city on your own with friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the WCSC program are professional internships in a variety of settings where students make positive contributions to the community and gain vocational direction. He is working in construction project management for the nonprofit affordable housing developer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jazmine Carter<\/strong>, a business administration major with a human resources minor from Fairfax, Virginia, is interning as an assistant in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ymcadc.org\/\">YMCA of Metropolitan Washington<\/a> human resources headquarters, helping to prepare presentations and briefings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joshua Ehlers<\/strong>, an accounting and business administration major from Bluffton University and Defiance, Ohio, is working at <a href=\"https:\/\/breadforthecity.org\/\">Bread for the City<\/a>, a nonprofit that provides financial literacy and education for low-income D.C. residents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shanon Gallagher<\/strong>, a psychology and sociology major from Bluffton University and Marengo, Ohio, is interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.provhosp.org\/patients-guests\/locations\/carroll-manor\">Carroll Manor<\/a>, which provides mental health support in a nursing and rehabilitation home for the elderly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Austin Hart<\/strong>, a business administration major from Manheim, Pennsylvania, is working at Washington Area Community Investment Fund (WACIF), a community investment fund. She is interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcc.org\">Mennonite Central Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rances Rodriguez<\/strong>, a digital media and photography major from Harrisonburg, Virginia, is with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitarartscenter.org\/\">Sitar Arts Center<\/a>, teaching digital media, design and photography to low-income students in a diverse neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephen Sheppard<\/strong>, a digital media major and business administration minor from Sterling, Virginia, is at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.layc-dc.org\/en\/\">Latin American Youth Center<\/a>, creating and teaching design and photography projects in support of a youth summer arts and peacebuilding program.<\/p>\n<p>Also at the YMCA\u00a0 of Metropolitan Washington is <strong>Myneshia Walker<\/strong>, a sociology major and coaching minor from Freeman, Virginia. She is working in summer recreation programs with youth at various sites around the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Riley Wesp<\/strong>, a computer science major and business administration minor from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is interning at <a href=\"https:\/\/techimpact.org\/\">Tech Impact<\/a>, which provides IT support for area nonprofit clients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brianna Zook<\/strong>, a major in kinesiology and exercise science with coaching and business administration majors, is interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pivotphysicaltherapy.com\/\">Pivot Physical Therapy<\/a>.
