{"id":38576,"date":"2018-06-08T15:12:42","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T19:12:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=38576"},"modified":"2018-06-08T15:25:32","modified_gmt":"2018-06-08T19:25:32","slug":"ruth-maust-13-earns-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/ruth-maust-13-earns-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemist Ruth Maust &#8217;13 earns NSF graduate research fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2013 graduate of Eastern Mennonite University has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the next three years <\/span><b>Ruth Maust \u201813<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will continue her doctoral research in Professor Ramesh Jasti\u2019s lab in the University of Oregon\u2019s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. As a fellow, she will receive an annual stipend, education allowance for tuition and fees, and opportunities for international research and professional development.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Explore EMU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/chemistry\/\">chemistry major<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/03\/biochemistry-major-awarded-accreditation-by-the-american-society-for-biochemistry-and-molecular-biology\/\">ASBMB\u00a0biochemistry accreditation<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maust researches the incorporation of \u201ccarbon nanohoop\u201d molecules into polymers and materials, essentially \u201cmaking new molecular structures, then studying their properties, and figuring out how to design materials with the properties we want.\u201d Carbon nanohoops, she said, \u201chave surprisingly different properties than the analogous linear molecules, making them fascinating as potential sensors, membranes, organic light-emitting diodes, and environmental remediation agents \u2013 to name a few!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love that chemistry combines logical thinking and creativity,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s also really cool to be able to make molecules and materials that have never existed before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Named an \u201coutstanding chemistry student\u201d her senior year as a <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/chemistry\/\">chemistry major<\/a> at EMU \u2013 \u201cdefinitely give a shoutout to <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/all-name?show=tlk326\">Tara Kishbaugh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=ms826\">Matt Siderhurst<\/a>!\u201d she wrote in a recent email \u2013 Maust completed a materials chemistry lab internship at the Graz University of Technology in Austria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After graduating, she worked at the Green Building Alliance for a year through the Pittsburgh Urban Leadership Service Experience (PULSE).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following earning her PhD in 2021, Maust plans \u201cto work on developing and translating sustainable chemistry solutions for the chemical, consumer products, building materials or other industries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 2013 graduate of Eastern Mennonite University has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
