{"id":38541,"date":"2018-05-31T13:59:41","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T17:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=38541"},"modified":"2018-05-31T14:00:06","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T18:00:06","slug":"emu-naacp-faith-in-action-co-host-religious-leaders-summit-racial-equity-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/emu-naacp-faith-in-action-co-host-religious-leaders-summit-racial-equity-training\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU, NAACP and Faith in Action co-host religious leaders summit, racial equity training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/diversity\/committee-on-diversity-and-inclusion\">Committee on Diversity and Inclusion<\/a> (CODI) was one of three community organizations that hosted a religious leaders summit and a racial equity training on campus this spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though the two events were separate gatherings, they \u201ctied together in many ways with regard to social justice and issues of equity,\u201d said professor and CODI chair <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=pannellm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Melody Pannell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The religious leaders summit took place on April 26, 2018, with representatives of EMU and Baptist, Episcopal, Mennonite and other churches. The April 27-28 racial equity training was attended by select EMU students, faculty and staff as well as representatives of various churches and community agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CODI is comprised of faculty, staff and students and works to develop and sustain a diverse and welcoming community of learning. It provides education and training on diversity and inclusion \u2013 and much more \u2013 to the EMU community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NAACP Religious Affairs Committee includes chapter members who are ministerial and lay leaders who, among other responsibilities, \u201cprovide resource assistance for religious education and social actions activities associated with the improvement of race relations,\u201d according to Pannell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faith in Action is a coalition of 25 congregations including Christians, Jews, Muslims and Unitarians working together to effect systemic change in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Religious Leaders Summit<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The goal of the April 26 summit was titled \u201cSocial Justice as a Movement of Faith\u201d was to bring together religious leaders in the community \u201cto ask how we can respond to or engage in this particular climate on issues of social justice, and be challenged in looking at the Gospel as a social justice gospel,\u201d Pannell said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It featured as keynote speaker The Reverend Dr. Gregory M. Howard, president of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia and senior pastor of First Baptist Church East End in Newport News, Virginia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his speech \u201cRace, Religion and What\u2019s Right,\u201d Howard highlighted oppression in the American Dream, the ongoing ramifications of privilege, and the schools-to-prison pipeline, and said that \u201cdifferent\u201d does not mean \u201cdeficient.\u201d Rather, he said, diversity is divine. Howard quoted the Rev. Dr. Frank Thomas, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Dream 2.0: A Christian Way Out of the Great Recession<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, released by Abingdon Press in August 2012, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">saying that, \u201cour greatest enemy is privilege because no one wants to give it up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whsv.com\/content\/news\/EMU-collaborates-with-local-religious-leaders-to-talk-social-justice-480990991.html\"><b>Watch WHSV coverage of the religious leaders summit.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Howard is the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Sacred Rhetoric: The Gospel According to Religious Folk Talk <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voices Crying Out in the Wilderness: Theological Reflection Where Context Matters <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Borderstone 2010, 2014). He earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, where he also teaches, and a Doctor of Ministry in homiletics from the Aquinas Institute of Theology at St. Louis University. He was a 2009 Joe R. Engle Fellow at Princeton Theological Seminary and is currently pursuing a master\u2019s degree in public policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Racial Equity Training<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facilitated by the North Carolina-based Racial Equity Institute, the workshop was titled \u201cPhase 1: Foundations in Historical and Institutional Racism.\u201d It emphasizes a shift in focus \u201cfrom individual bigotry and bias\u201d to \u201chistorical, cultural, structural and institutional analysis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The training allowed participants \u201cto develop a clearer understanding of how and why a system of racial stratification was created in the U.S. and how it has persisted through time, even as overtly racist laws have been overturned,\u201d said Dayna Olson-Getty, associate pastor of Community Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The data showing inequity, said Pannell, is \u201cmind blowing.\u201d For example, workshop materials note research from Michelle Alexander\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (New Press, 2012) that found that \u201calthough whites are more likely to violate drug laws than people of color, in some states black men have been sent to prison on drug charges at rates 20-50 times greater than white men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And once they are released, it states, \u201ca web of laws and regulations that make it difficult or impossible to secure jobs, education, housing and public assistance and often to vote or serve on juries\u201d effectively creates a \u201cpermanent second-class citizenship\u201d akin to living under Jim Crow law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That \u2013 along with other historical practices and policies \u2013 has contributed to wealth disparity that workshop materials call \u201ca warning sign of a much greater social problem.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is not just about if we see ourselves as good people,\u201d Pannell said, \u201cor whether or not we are personally trying to oppress somebody, but we have to look at privilege \u2013 which some people have and some people don\u2019t. Why is that, and what do we do about that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis training is invaluable for anyone who wants to contribute to the pursuit of a more racially just world,\u201d said Olson-Getty, \u201cand lays the groundwork for community leaders who want to work together in their own community to pursue racial equity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><i>Professor Melody Pannell teaches an online Race and Gender course that begins\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Monday, June 4<\/span><\/span>.
