{"id":38199,"date":"2018-05-07T12:33:54","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T16:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=38199"},"modified":"2018-05-10T11:52:52","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T15:52:52","slug":"cjp-graduates-from-eight-states-and-12-countries-charged-to-maximize-healing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/cjp-graduates-from-eight-states-and-12-countries-charged-to-maximize-healing\/","title":{"rendered":"CJP graduates from eight states and 12 countries charged to &#8216;maximize healing&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At an afternoon reception following Sunday\u2019s Commencement ceremony at Eastern Mennonite University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a> Executive Director Daryl Byler reminded the 29 graduates that they were now members of a huge and hope-filled network: 638 alumni from 78 countries currently working in 65 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also noted the personal transformations that many graduates experienced while at CJP, and shared hopes that that dynamic would continue in their future work. Peacebuilding is our journey towards minimizing the harm we cause and maximizing the healing we can contribute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CJP conferred a total of 29 degrees. Additionally, three students earned graduate certificates in conflict transformation, and one in restorative justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/womens-leadership\/\">Women\u2019s Peacebuilding Leadership Program<\/a>, all from Kenya, earned graduate certificates in peacebuilding leadership. [<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/fourth-cohort-of-womens-peacebuilding-leadership-program-begins-their-studies-at-the-summer-peacebuilding-institute\/\">Read more about this cohort here<\/a>.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These graduates are particularly significant, as Commencement speaker <strong>Leymah Gbowee<\/strong> MA \u201807 was instrumental in the founding of the program in 2011. Defenders of Peace and Justice,\u201d offered statistics about the rising numbers of global conflicts, armed and insurgent groups, drug cartels, terror attacks and deaths. \u201cBeyond these numbers, when we look around our world, especially in places people never think about, you have issues of housing crisis, you have rape and exploitation of women in different parts of the world, the threat to the environment and many other vices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cburning\u201d question, she said, is \u201cWho is going to fix our world? Who is going to give hope or the hopeless? Who is going solve the problems of the world?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStep out,\u201d she urged. \u201cWhatever your calling may be, defend peace and justice with your actions, your interactions and your attitude. Most especially, when issues are not longer trending and the hashtags are no longer hashing, and the lights and the cameras are off, defend peace, defend justice. We will do our best,\u201d he said. \u201cI know my friends, and my friends will do what they can when they see injustice. This is a heavy burden, but we will carry it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lee passed around a spindle of red yarn, replicating a process that had been shared in a reflective circle among graduates and CJP community a few days before.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span>There i<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s a thread that connects the dots of our lives,\u201d she explained. \u201cThis thread may be difficult to see, and it\u2019s not always easy to explain how we came to this little town in the Shenandoah Valley studying something called conflict transformation and passing things around in circles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38202\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/05\/cjp-graduates-from-eight-states-and-12-countries-charged-to-maximize-healing\/20180506-cjp-graduation-003-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38202\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38202\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-CJP-Graduation-003-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-CJP-Graduation-003-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-CJP-Graduation-003-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-CJP-Graduation-003-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Chi Lee was the second of two graduate speakers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She urged her classmates to find the threads, \u201csleep with the bread that makes us feel safe,\u201d and embrace the mystery, the risk, and the unknown of the promise of peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tradition of the reception is for professors to give short speeches about each graduate. In his welcoming introduction to this part of the reception, Professor Carl Stauffer highlighted how close the community becomes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe danced together, sung together, sat on the floor together, had long hard conversations in offices, sat in circle and sat and ate together, \u00a0walked through the anxiety of com exams, and all of this is how we become a learning community.
