The seminary conferred 18 degrees and four graduate certificates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among them were four graduates of the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/seminary\/degree-programs\/macl\">MA in Christian Leadership<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a new degree program that balances spiritual growth, leadership training, and individualized integration of coursework that best fits the student\u2019s intended ministry setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seminary baccalaureate and commissioning was Friday, May 4, in Martin Chapel.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">View Commencement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FY9zOWqsXBc&amp;feature=youtu.be\">video<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/photos\/commencement-2018\/\">photos<\/a>. <\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam King, pastor at <\/span>Rise<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Church in Harrisonburg, opened the service with an original poem, written for the occasion, titled \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of &#8216;Adams&#8217; in this place.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poem, published in its entirety at the end of this article, asks, \u201cCan you see who God has made you to be?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38226\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38226\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/05\/eastern-mennonite-seminary-graduates-22-better-christ-followers-to-many-callings\/20180506-commencement-ceremony-as-045-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38226\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38226 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-Commencement-Ceremony-AS-045-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-Commencement-Ceremony-AS-045-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-Commencement-Ceremony-AS-045-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180506-Commencement-Ceremony-AS-045-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seminary associate dean Nancy Heisey hoods a graduate\u00a0Philip J. Yoder.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this place \u2014 Eastern Mennonite Seminary \u2014 are Biblical figures among a \u201cgreat cloud of witnesses\u201d and whose legacies live on, as does Jesus \u201cin each face here,\u201d the poem states. There are the Noahs \u201cGathering the beasts together \/ Building floating refugee boats for the coming flood,\u201d the Leahs who are overlooked \u201cbut oh so strong \/ Steadily producing quality work \/ Steadfast and faithful,\u201d the Marys \u201cbearing the Spirit of God in their souls \/ boldly declaring with swelled bellies \/ that God is doing something new,\u201d and many more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook around!\u201d it states. \u201cDo you see them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After missing out on the 2017 seminary baccalaureate because of illness, invited speaker Erin Dufault-Hunter, assistant professor of Christian ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Ca., returned to provide the keynote address. Dufault-Hunter <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a longtime member of Pasadena <\/span>Mennonite<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Church, where she regularly participates in the music team and occasionally preaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graduates Jason Wagner and Sarah Bailey provided reflections at the baccalaureate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8216;We\u2019re trading in who we thought we were for who God made us to be&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bailey was also among the students providing graduate perspectives at the main commencement ceremony on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The degree \u201cis our receipt\u201d for \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Hebrew and the Greek exams, the hundreds of pages of required reading each week, the late-night paper-writing sessions, the pain and the tears as we ripped open our souls in formation classes in CPE,\u201d she said. \u201cToday we trade it all in for a piece of paper.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued: \u201cThis paper is our receipt, the symbol of the exchange that has happened for us here. Because over these past years in seminary, we have been trading things in and today is the culmination of that. We\u2019re trading in all the bucketfuls of coffee that we\u2019ve lived on, for some spiritual awakening. We\u2019re trading in our insecurity for new confidence. We\u2019re trading in our original questions for some new and better ones. We\u2019re trading in our biases for some compassion. We\u2019re trading in our desires to change the world for some skills to actually do it&#8230;. We\u2019re trading in who we thought we were for who God made us to be, one assignment, one reading, one hallway discussion, one tearful moment, one chapel service at a time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bailey noted the various callings of her classmates: \u201cto work with young people, with the elderly, the sick, the traumatized, the victims, the prisoners, the conflicted, the searching, the faithful and the faithless.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe go from here as pastors, as counselors, campus ministers, chaplains, activists, and much, much more. Reidy, Bunker Hill, W.Va.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ken Ryan Wettig, Harrisonburg, Va.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>&#8220;There\u2019s a lot of \u2018Adams\u2019 in this place&#8221; by Adam King MDiv &#8217;18<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of \u2018Adams\u2019 in this place. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not atoms, with a &#8216;T\u2019, like the building blocks of matter,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but \u2018Adams\u2019, with a \u2018D\u2019, like the building block of humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eager to name and categorize and invent and create<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there\u2019s a lot of Eves in this place as well<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birthing new ideas, new life<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asking hard questions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Challenging the status quo<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Noahs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gathering the beasts together<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building floating refugee boats for the coming flood<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and inviting any and all to come on board, even the scoffers, mockers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Abrahams and a lot of Sarahs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laughing at God\u2019s cosmic joke<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then discovering God follows through on promises<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Isaacs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willingly following their Father with an abiding trust<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wondering why there\u2019s no ram<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what\u2019s this sharp knife for<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Jacobs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tricksters, jesters, jokers, and thieves<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kind-hearted mommas boys <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who wrestle with God<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Rachels in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beautiful and favored<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing water from wells<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing hope for the future<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Leahs in this place too<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overlooked but oh so strong<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steadily producing quality work<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steadfast and faithful<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Josephs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full of big dreams and world changing projects<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climbing the corporate ladder <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to sit next to the world\u2019s Pharaohs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Shipporahs and Puahs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undermining the powers that be<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risking death <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to rescue life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Moses\u2019 in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reluctant leaders of people<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deliverers of hope and liberation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God\u2019s trusted spokesperson to a world gone mad<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Samuels in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Called in the night and crying out<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HERE I AM!! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEND ME!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Davids in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slaying giants and building kingdoms<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prone to stray, but quick to repent<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people after God\u2019s own heart<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Solomons in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wise beyond measure<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should listen to them more<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Jeremiahs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crying out to the people <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAY ATTENTION!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weeping in grief when they refuse to listen<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Isaiahs in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whispering words of hope<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">return, rescue, redemption<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Marys in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bearing the Spirit of God in their souls<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boldly declaring with swelled bellies<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that God is doing something new<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Peters in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brash and loud and quick to act<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full of ambition and hope <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humble and willing to receive forgiveness<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Magdalenes in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faithful to the very end<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never leaving the side of those they love<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the first to declare \u201cLIFE HAS WON!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Pauls in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brilliant beyond belief<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journeying across worlds and seas<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with Good News that will not be contained<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of Jesus in this place<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see him in each face here<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filled with the Holy Spirit<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and willing to lay their lives down for their friend<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a great cloud of witnesses\u2019 in this place, my friends<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look around!
