Twenty-two years later, she has left an indelible mark on the campus, the local and regional arts community, and many, many students.<\/p>\n<p>In August, she\u2019ll begin as Tim and Gail Buchanan Endowed Chair of the Fine Arts Division at Friends University \u2014 \u201can incredible opportunity,\u201d she says, to do similar collaborative work in the far larger and more varied arts community of Wichita, Kansas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38133\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38133\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/05\/music-professor-joan-griffing-leaves-her-indelible-mark-on-emu-and-area-youth-programs\/20180430-joan-griffing-retirement-party-013-1000px-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38133\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38133\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180430-Joan-Griffing-Retirement-Party-013-1000px-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180430-Joan-Griffing-Retirement-Party-013-1000px-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180430-Joan-Griffing-Retirement-Party-013-1000px-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/20180430-Joan-Griffing-Retirement-Party-013-1000px-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Joan Griffing listens to tributes from colleagues and fellow community music enthusiasts during a reception in Lehman Auditorium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At a reception this week in her honor, Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=jr582\"><strong>James Richardson<\/strong><\/a> praised Griffing\u2019s mentorship, her abilities as an \u201cexceptional musician,\u201d and \u201cher compassion for the whole person, whether that be a colleague or a student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe brings to everything she does a concern for the soul and the whole student,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I think of Joan, I will always think of what I have heard her say many times, and I\u2019m sure many of you have heard her say it as well: \u2018At the end of the day, it\u2019s all about the student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Emeritus <strong>Kenneth J. Nafziger<\/strong>, longtime colleague in the EMU music department, commented that he had \u201cseen many musicians come to EMU with significant gaps in their learning and grow as accomplished performers under her careful guidance, experience both solo and ensemble work and play in a variety of settings, all of which are exactly what music is supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nafziger and Griffing have also spent many years working together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svbachfestival.org\/\">Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival<\/a>. The conductor thanked the concertmaster for expanding his own understanding of strings instruments and string players to the benefit of all. \u201cShe has been able to translate my musical wishes into sounds I had hoped for and I am most thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also in attendance were Bach Festival President <strong>Michael Allain<\/strong> and board member M<strong>ing Ivory<\/strong>, both of whom shared anecdotes and wished Griffing well on her new endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>The reception was attended by several former students, four of whom now work for EMU (two as violin instructors), but also representatives of community arts organization that Griffing has supported and promoted, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.svcc.org\">Shenandoah Valley Children\u2019s Choir<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Making music more accessible to area youth<\/h3>\n<p>When asked to identify her own accomplishments, Griffing lists two more programs for youth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8062\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/rehearsal\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8062 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2011\/09\/joan-griffing-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2011\/09\/joan-griffing-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2011\/09\/joan-griffing.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Joan Griffing, here playing the violin in 2011, has been concertmaster of the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival for many years. (EMU file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBoth <strong>Sharon Miller<\/strong> and I started to play violin in public schools programs,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was something that was missing here that she and I wanted to start, and I\u2019d have to say that\u2019s something I am proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/music\/preparatory-program\/harrisonburg-city-strings\">Harrisonburg City Schools Strings program<\/a>, a program of EMU\u2019s Preparatory Music program directed by Miller, began 11 years ago and is now offered at all six elementary schools and both middle schools.<\/p>\n<p>Griffing also helped start the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anygivenchildharrisonburg.org\/about.html\">Any Given Child Initiative<\/a>, a partnership of Harrisonburg City Schools with the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. to provide equal access to arts for students in K-8th grade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s been fun to work with dancers and visual artists, to get to know artists of different stripes and think about ways we can bring them together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3>An advocate for music at EMU<\/h3>\n<p>At EMU, Griffing championed the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/music\/interdisciplinary\">interdisciplinary major<\/a>, an inventive redesign of the music curriculum to broaden accessibility and encourage students to combine a music major with a second major in a different field.<\/p>\n<p>Hearkening back to her own roots, the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/outreach-chamber-quartet-brings-together-biology-religion-education-majors-and-yes-one-future-professional-musician-to-give-the-gift-of-music-in-unusual-venues\/\">outreach string quartet class<\/a> remains a favorite offering, as \u201ca way for students to learn to take their music out to marginalized communities,\u201d she said, such as the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind and Gemeinschaft Home for ex-offenders.<\/p>\n<p>Reluctant to single out one or two of her many students over the years for individual accolades, Griffing says she\u2019s most proud of her performance majors. \u201cTo a one, they have each accomplished more than they thought they could achieve in their four years,\u201d she said. \u201cAll of them won our semi-annual concerto\/aria competition.\u00a0To eventually play a concerto with the orchestra takes guts and preparation and hard work, and to get to the performance level they do is really quite an achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28383\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/outreach-chamber-quartet-brings-together-biology-religion-education-majors-and-yes-one-future-professional-musician-to-give-the-gift-of-music-in-unusual-venues\/20160413-outreach-quartet-rehearsal-feature-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28383\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28383 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/20160413-Outreach-Quartet-Rehearsal-FEATURE-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/20160413-Outreach-Quartet-Rehearsal-FEATURE-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/20160413-Outreach-Quartet-Rehearsal-FEATURE-3.jpg 555w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two members of a string quartet practice under the tutelage of Professor Joan Griffing in 2017. (Photo by Andrew Strack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of her administrative work, which included fundraising, planning, mentoring, scheduling and more, Griffing says that choice of involvement enabled her \u201cto help more than just my violin students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy helping my colleagues do their jobs,\u201d she said. \u201cTo me, that\u2019s servant leadership: supporting my colleagues so they enjoy coming to work every day. Ultimately that helps the students, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(To this, she adds that she is also doesn\u2019t mind getting into \u201cthe nitty-gritty, which arts people sometimes don\u2019t much care for, understandably so, because they\u2019d rather do their arts.\u201d)<\/p>\n<h3>A widely-traveled professional<\/h3>\n<p>All this while, Griffing has led an active professional career, performing as first violinist with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Eastern Music Festival, and concertmaster with the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Austria and Italy, as well as with the Coronado, Grand Teton, Norfolk and Spoleto festivals.\u00a0She\u2019s performed in Taiwan, Brazil and Australia, and spent a sabbatical at the University of Otago, New Zealand, studying the role of music in peace and conflict issues.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38135\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38135\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/05\/music-professor-joan-griffing-leaves-her-indelible-mark-on-emu-and-area-youth-programs\/musica-harmonia-44-edit-3-1000px-1-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38135\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38135 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/Musica-Harmonia-44-Edit-3-1000px-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/Musica-Harmonia-44-Edit-3-1000px-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/Musica-Harmonia-44-Edit-3-1000px-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/05\/Musica-Harmonia-44-Edit-3-1000px-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joan Griffing (right) with members of Musica Harmonia. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As founding member of the chamber music group Musica Harmonia, she regularly tours to promote peace and cultural understanding through musical collaboration. The group has recorded two CDs.<\/p>\n<p>Griffing says she intends to keep many connections alive from her new home in Kansas. She and her husband, clarinetist <strong>Leslie Nicholas<\/strong>, will return to Harrisonburg every June to play with the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival.<\/p>\n<p>And she\u2019s looking forward to making new connections, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always had a strong interest in the bigger picture of all the arts, how they connect and the possibilities of collaboration. The arts can and do change people\u2019s lives for the better,\u201d she said. \u201cBy overseeing all the arts at Friends and embedding them across campus, I\u2019ll be able to have a broader impact than I am able to have here. That\u2019s very exciting to me.
